Better Than Us on Netflix

Started watching the new to Netflix Better Than Us last night . Pretty decent robot sci-fi. Russkie TV with 16 episodes. It's no Season 1 of Westworld or anything but it's a decent mash of robots, crime, the old Isaac Asimov's robot rules, evil corporation, cyber punks, dead beat dad, dogged detective, ******* teen son, beautiful but deadly robot etc. Only 2029 so no elaborate super future like Altered Carbon or the like. This near future isn't gritty. They did a good job or making the settings somewhat generic so it kinda easily fits an international audience, not going for Russian authentic , say, like Chernobyl or anything. Dad's driving an old Buick.

Russian, as noted, and be forewarned that's it is dubbed English but the dubbing is well done. I usually dislike dubbing for movies but for TV it's okay and this is done better than okay. On par with the dubbing for the Danish The Rain which was superbly done considering that show is sorta mediocre.

Keep in mind that Boxster's mantra is "even mediocre sci-fi is better than no sci-fi all" (updated and revised from my old "bad sci-fi is better than no sci-fi at all" that was dashed by SyFy Channel).

EDIT: Well that unraveled quickly. Went from maybe decent/okay to mediocre to "Should I even keep watching this?" o_O

It's Finally Game Week!!

After waiting for what seemed to be eternity, the season is finally here. After a whole off season of chugging Koolaid, the time has finally come. This could be the year things go to a whole new level never seen before in Ames. I could not be more excited for football this fall!!! Screw it, I might take the whole week off in anticipation. Whose excited for Cyclone Football?!?!

Monday OT #1 - You Don't Know What You Got Til It's Gone

Thanks to @madguy30 for both the suggestions to do Monday OTs here in the off-season, as well as the following ideas!

What are things you have a deeper appreciation for later in life after they've happened?

Like, for me - fighting my children to take a nap has made me realize how absolutely dumb kids are to not relish taking a nap every day of their life. It's also sort of magical to have people chauffeur you around before you're 16, and we don't realize how good we had it until we're about 25.

What are yours?

Monday OT #2 - A Grower, Not a Shower

Thanks again to @madguy30 for the idea! It's sort of a flip of last week's: shows or movies you didn't think were very good when they first came out, but then realized they were great.

A couple for me:

- Punch Drunk Love - I've long been a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson, but thought this was super dull and slow when I saw it in the theater. I've grown to appreciate it more as time has gone on.

- The Big Lebowski - I thought it was just okay the first time I saw it, but now really enjoy it.

Things really took a turn today in WV

Just as the WV WBB was getting ready to leave for an overseas trip, Tynese Martin was suspended indefinitely. If this holds throughout the season I'm sure it will have quite an effect on their season as she would have certainly made the preseason 1st team roster in the Big 12.

Texas has also had quite a few players transfer out including 6'7" Sedona Prince who was expected to have a major roll on the team this year. TX still has some good starters in Holmes, Sutton, Collier & Higgs. But may be slightly hurting this year for depth strength.

OTN this week: Top albums of '94

Coming up this week at On That Note: The next segment concludes our 2019 album series, with “'Top LPs of 1994.”

@MeanDean, @CycloneRulzzz and I want to give a head-start to find your favorites from that year.

***Reminder: DO NOT post your selections in this thread. Official OTN will launch late Tuesday, as is our custom.

Let the research and listening begin. :)

Mpls Star Trib feature on 2020 Cyclone QB Aidan Bouman

Quarterbacks without peer: Dual-threat danger Jalen Suggs, drop-back classic Aidan Bouman

prepsweb2_large.jpg

Bouman has about three months of high school football left. He committed to the Iowa State Cyclones before last season and spent much of his summer in classrooms, preparing to graduate early. He expects to be in Ames, preparing for his freshman year, in early January.

The other QB profiled, Jalen Suggs, is someone we were in on for basketball.

Not as in-depth as Jared Stansbury's CF piece from June but nice coverage by the Star Tribune nevertheless.
