Turn kicking woes into competitive advantage

Am I the only one who thinks the recent kicking woes might be a great opportunity to create a competitive advantage? Every decision is situational, of course, but I think we would be pretty dangerous if the coaches used the general philosophy that we're going for it on any 4th down between the opponent's 25 and 35. From the opponent's perspective, I would hate to have to defend this offense for four downs in that field position.

California legalizes college athlete endorsements

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Defying the NCAA, California’s governor signed a first-in-the-nation law Monday that will let college athletes hire agents and make money from endorsements — a move that could upend amateur sports in the U.S. and trigger a legal challenge.

Under the law, which takes effect in 2023, students at public and private universities in the state will be allowed to sign deals with sneaker companies, soft drink makers or other advertisers and profit from their names and likenesses, just like the pros.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and others cast the law as an attempt to bring more fairness to big-money college sports and let athletes share in the wealth they create for their schools.

Haliburton, an Oshkosh, Wisconsin native, ranked among the nation’s top freshmen in a number of categories last season. His all-around game has drawn rave reviews as he averaged 6.8 points, 3.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals last season. He became one of just four freshmen in college basketball since 1992-93 to record 125 assists, 50 steals and 30 blocks.

He also ranked second nationally with a 4.46 assist-to-turnover ratio, which included a school-record 17-assist game (Southern) in which he had just one turnover.

RELEASE: Kristin Scott named to Lisa Leslie Award watch list

From Iowa State Athletic Communications:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Iowa State women's basketball junior center Kristin Scott is a candidate for the Lisa Leslie Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Friday.

Scott was named to the preseason watch list of 20 women's basketball student-athletes.

Last season, Scott averaged 12.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and shot 56.1 percent from the floor and a team-high 38.1 percent from long range, knocking down 45 triples. Scott was Iowa State's second-leading scorer in 2018-19, helping Iowa State one of its most successful seasons in program history with a second-place finish in the Big 12 and a 26-9 overall record.

To start the 2019-20 season, Scott was to the All-Big 12 team and was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in 2018-19.

Scott is the first Cyclones to appear on the Leslie Award Watch List. She is also the second Cyclone this season to be named to a WBCA position award watch list, joining Ashley Joens who is on the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List. In 2019, Bridget Carleton was named the Cheryl Miller Award winner, becoming the first Cyclone to win a WBCA Position Award and be named to the Naismith Starting Five.

The Selection Committee for the Lisa Leslie Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. New to the award this season is Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2019 Lisa Leslie Award will be narrowed to just 10.
