One of my favorite Cyclone teams growing up, the 1992 squad. Featuring a starting lineup of Ron Bayless, Justus Thigpen, Hoiberg, Michalik, and Howard Eaton. Not only is this team 30 years old, it was also the last time Iowa State made the tournament 4 games under .500 in conference until this year. This entire lineup could shoot from 3 and they were so fun to watch. Here's the link to their first round game versus UNC Charlotte.

Bracket Opponents in Ames

Georgia
Georgia finished sixth in the SEC going 9-7, 20-9 overall. We share two common opponents in Texas Tech and LSU. Georgia beat TTU in Lubbock 66-56. They lost by six in both games against LSU.

Georgia spreads minutes out amongst ten players. Only one averages more than 30 minutes (Morrison).

Scoring

Staiti and Morrison are the only ones averaging double figures and scoring at 15 and 13.8 per game

Staiti shoots 51% from the floor, nearly all of the two point variety.

They are not a big three point shooting team hitting 31% of their 315 tries. In comparison, ISU made over three times as many three-pointers this season.

Georgia is an ok free throw shooting team at 74% attempting 447.

Rebounding

Staiti averages nearly nine per game. Georgia out-rebounds it’s opponents by five per game

Their players very rarely foul out of games. Only five instances all season.

They average 18 turnovers per game.

UT Arlington

UTA went 20-7 and 11-4 in conference play. Common opponents include Baylor (L 81-54) and Okla State (L 61-46).

They spread minutes among 8 players with three (Jacobs, Milton and Chastain) averaging over 30 per outing.

Scoring

Jacobs lead the team with 21 per game with Milton being the only other player averaging double digits (12).

The team is not a three point shooting team only attempting 387 on the year and making 27%. Benjamin and Ferrel are their top threats hitting 37% of their attempts.

Free Throws - they got to the line 564 times and made 69%. Jacob’s gets to the line the most but only hits 63%.

The averaged 14 turnovers per game while forcing 16 per game.

Two players (Milton and Ferrell) average 4.5 assists per gamep

Milwaukee Roll Call

Super excited that we get to play close to home for the first weekend. No idea if we are gonna win or not, but just glad I get to go support the cyclones. After last season, I did not think we would be dancing again this so soon. Hoping for a win of course, but if nothing else, Milwaukee is a fun destination for a weekend get away.

Who else gonna be there supporting the clones?

Bracket season has arrived in Big 12 country. Two number one seeds are validation that this has indeed been a banner year for the conference. Having 6 teams make the tournament is excellent, too. Although, if OU had advanced to the Big 12 tournament finals, it would have have been 7. But of the 6 teams in the tourney, who has the mettle to win twice in the first weekend?

ISU - What an exciting NCAA path

You have a very interesting opponent in the first game with UTA. They are not a pushover. In fact they have a star player named Starr Jacobs. We watched her in HS here in Duncanville, TX and she was being looked at by many schools. I really never heard why she went the JC route but I suspect it may have been a grade issue. She is their leading scorer and it's not even close. In fact I think I read that she averaged 27 points a game in her last 4 games. She plays forward/post and ya'll should really enjoy watching her. UTA has a couple more girls that do well also. I'm not predicting an upset here by any means, but I am saying this should be some great competition for the Clones to get them prepared for the road ahead.

Georgia has underperformed this year IMO. They have a great coach and some very good players. If they get their chemistry together they will be hard to beat. And of course if you get by them you KNOW what is ahead. The Hawks and the Gamecocks. Would love to see the Sisters put the Hoks out of their misery so the talking heads can shut up about Clark. I really don't think you can beat S. Carolina, but then again MO & KY did. So get after it. I'll certainly be rooting for you.

In fact I really regret that I can't be there for the first round in Ames. I'd really love to watch Starr play again. UTA's first game of the season was against Baylor. I think BU already had two games under their belt. And Starr Jacobs was playing superb the first half. BU only had a 6 point lead. Then about the third play of the 3rd quarter Starr got a leg injury and didn't come back in the game. Things went south for them after that.

Anyway good luck guys. Enjoyed seeing a lot of ya'll up in KC.

Upset Specials?

Anyone have some outlier picks, or thinking of picking, in terms of pretty substantial upsets? I'm talking first round only and must be a 12 over 5 or bigger. 11/6, 10/7, 9/8 aren't upsets really these days...

I have loved Providence all year but man I think South Dakota State I could see winning and how ****** would that be because I think Iowa ROLLS Richmond by like 30.

I am close to pulling the trigger on New Mexico State over UCONN.

The one I really want to pick is Colgate over Wisconsin. I've said all year Wisconsin is playing with fire. Something like 15 wins are 6 points or less. Didn't play well down the stretch losing at home to Nebraska and early exit in Indy as well. Colgate has won 19 of their last 20 games...most of them blowouts. Gotta think about this more but I may do it.

Vermont over Arkansas seems trendy but I don't see it.

Iowa State a No. 11 seed in Milwaukee, will face No. 6 LSU Friday
