I had a nice chat with Iowa State cornerback Leonard Johnson at media day last week.

He wasn’t very cooperative though.

Let me explain.

I went into this interview with Iowa State’s All-Big 12 cornerback aiming to write a column about how some of the best wide receivers in all of college football like Ryan Broyles and Justin Blackmon are on Iowa State’s schedule. Point is, Leonard will have all sorts of opportunities to prove exactly how good he is.

I was fishing for a great quote and Leonard has given a few of them over the years. Leonard didn’t take the bait.

“I just look at it like I’m just playing," Johnson said. "I don’t care who we’re playing. I’m not that guy who thinks, ‘we’ve got Texas this week.’”

In Johnson’s eyes, Northern Iowa is no different than top-ranked Oklahoma.

I followed up, asking if he got just a little more psyched up for an individual matchup with Ryan Broyles than others, being that the Oklahoma receiver is regarded as one of the best in the game.

“Not at all," Johnson said. "I feel like that won’t get you too far.”

There goes that story idea. However, Johnson’s humble and responsible comments did help me with this 200 word blog.
