DAYTON, Ohio – Maya Moore scored 25 points and top-ranked Connecticut made 11 3-pointers to defeat Iowa State, 74-36, Sunday afternoon in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championships at UD Arena. The Cyclones, who were picked to finish seventh in the Big 12’s preseason poll, finish the season with a 25-8 record.
“That is the best team I have coached against,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “They have a great economy of motion. They are always in the right place at the right time.”
The Huskies hit 11-of-26 (42.3 percent) of their shots from behind the arc and 39.4 percent (26-66) total from the field in the win. ISU shot just 28.3 percent (15-53) in the loss.
“Connecticut is a great team, but the reality is that we had open shots and didn’t hit them,” Fennelly said. “The only way we were going to be able to stay with this team was to make the open shots when we had them and we didn’t. UCONN is not going to let up because you aren’t hitting shots.”
UCONN (36-0) did what it has done so many times during its current 75-game winning streak, jumping out to a quick double-digit lead and never looking back.
