Joe Torre's Book Includes Story About Roger Clemens And His Testicle Rubdown | MLB | New York Yankees

In Tom Verducci's new book "The Yankee Years" Yankee trainer Steve Donahue on Clemens' pre-game ritual:
Donahue said Clemens’ usual pregame preparation included taking a whirlpool bath at the hottest temperature possible.
“He’d come out looking like a lobster,†Donahue said.
Then Donahue would rub the hottest possible liniment on his testicles. “He’d start snorting like a bull,†the trainer said. “That’s when he was ready to pitch.â€

Now that's dedication to your craft. I like my job and everything, but I don't need to be so good at it that I'd let some dude rub hot ointment all over my berries before I go to work.

roids make you do crazy stuff like acting like a bull and throwing broken bats at batters.

The hot liniment probably allowed his testicles to descend during the games to counteract the massive amounts of steriods he was taking.

I remember reading this about Clemens before.

I also vividly remember Icy Hot that I put on a pulled groin muscle migrating to more sensitive parts of the groin...not pleasant.

i got a bad heat rash when i was 18. worked in a shop for the city and it would get over 100 degrees in there frequently over the summer. all the humidity/friction of my clothes made me break out real bad in my thighs.

my step dad told to spray tinactin (IIRC) on the rash to dry it. it dried it up alright in a day or two, but when i sprayed it on i failed to cover anything up. YEOWSA!

Twig, berries, and even my barking spider were on fire with pain for a good 10 minutes. :biglaugh:

My question is this... It isn't really hard to rub something in that area yourself... Why would you let someone else do that for you... Well... ok... why would you let a male athletic trainer?

Are we maybe in the "Too Many Questions" part of the thread now, right after the TMI section?

Sure, I'm curious as to why, but I'm not sure I want to know anymore.

Maybe I shouldn't have clicked this thread.:wideeyed::wideeyed::wideeyed::wideeyed:

I figured this out while I was discussing this story with my wife... He wouldn't want to have the icy hot stuff on his fingers/hands before he pitched...

I will now be looking forward to the stories of the all the crazy young kids that try this trick after this story gets a little bit of mainstream pub.
