MLB: Wrigley Field Renovations

Proposed Cubs' Wrigley restoration plan | CSN Chicago

Ricketts coming strong on signage opposition from rooftop owners: "If we cannot get approval for this plan and our signage is blocked we will then consider moving out of Wrigley Field."

Follow @thekapman for the ongoing press conference.

Good for him. I really never understood how the rooftop owners had any leg to stand on in this fight. I especially didn't understand why any contract was signed by the previous ownership. They were lucky to have ever profited off of it in the first place. Back in the day it was cool, it was literally a rooftop, that you stood on, ate food and drank beer. And they built a couple of seats. Now, that they have actually stands out there, they aren't selling you the old time "rooftop tailgate" experience, they are selling you a ticket to the game. I don't blame Ricketts for being ****** about that.

Can anyone think of any other way I can charge people to watch a Major League Baseball game and not have to pay MLB for that? I know they had started charging the rooftop guys with that contract, but still. I'm actually surprised MLB let it go for this long.

I think I'm set in my ways. I don't like big change. I like the historical feel to Wrigley. I've only been to a couple games though, and the last time being 10 years ago. I couldn't comment on what needs improved.

The team...

I kid, I kid...

Kinda...

I had to go to Google earth to fully understand. I see what you guys are talking about. The buildings across the streets beyond the outfield actually built in rows of seating on the roof.

Happy Wrigley will live on but the video board and excessive signage is dumb. It looks ugly and out of place. Some smaller boards that would give you player stats would be cool but that picture looked truuible..

I agree the signage is kind of annoying, but it is simple economics. The building is falling apart, and whether someone wants it renovated or simply restored, a big bill is coming. So either locals need to pony up, or the club has to find additional revenue streams. Locals don't want to pony up, don't want to allow the normal number of night games (also would increase revenue), so signage it is.

If you had gone back once a year, they may not have had to make changes for $$$$.

Haha. Sorry Twins fan here and I haven't even been there since 2010. We had our son in 2011......this year will be the first year I get to see an MLB game again.

It really is a 50k stadium.

They already have the smaller boards that give player stats. Ricketts is simply pointing out that it is either this plan, or the Cubs will be playing baseball in a new, modern facility. I used to think I was the only Cubs fan who thought that dumping Wrigley would be a good idea, but I have learned that Cub fans are pretty split on the issue.

Lots of room down by Solider Field, putting a stadium down by the lake would be pretty cool.

I think David Kaplan said it best...when you go to 1 or 2 games per year, you love the old-school no advertising feel. When you work there everyday, all of that goes away. The place is a dump. Clubhouses are small and outdated, there aren't enough bathrooms, etc.

But baseball is a business. The Cubs are losing millions in advertising compared to everyone else in the league.

I get economics very well. It is just kind of a sad though that even a cool treasure like Wrigley that has magically barely been touched by the hyper commercialized world we live in is now falling. Oddities like Wrigley don't come around very often.

Be more like middle side cubs.

There is a definite line of demarcation in the city. Also...if the Cubs are moving (no way will that happen) they move west...not south. And no way would the city help the Ricketts family acquire that amount of land along the lake...never would happen.

I don't think most Chicagoans would call soldier field south side.
