Swedish wrestler throws away Olympic medal - 2008 Olympics - SI.com

But the row continued at the medal ceremony as he only grudgingly mounted the podium and after receiving his medal made a point of taking it off and leaving it in the center of the competition mat.

Swedish fans in the arena disagreed strongly with the original decision, jeering the judges, while coach Leo Myllari also weighed in.

"It's all politics," he said.

The medal was later returned to the sport's governing body.
And IMO, they should keep it - even if he asks for it back.

It's not new to the sport. A lot of wrestlers will pitch silver medals or runner-up trophies. I think Mark Perry of Iowa had two separate incidents in the last couple of years -- threw his shoes away after losing a match, and tossed a runner-up medal in the trash (at Big Tens, I believe).

I bet he will regret that when he gets older. Especially when his kids and grandkids want to see his medals and the best one he probably ever earned is gone.

So the moral of the story is that wrestlers are big babies.

Its disrespect for the sport, the games, and anyone who supported him getting there. Hell, its a slap in the face of someone who would have been proud to have gotten a medal but fell short.

Typical wrestler....from age 5 to 55, they are all a bunch of cry babies. It's the whole "me" mentality. Wrestlers have three main words in their vocabulary: me, myself, and I.

Dunno if you're stereotype fits all wrestlers - I've never heard of Cael crying (then again, I'm not sure that Cael's ever lost, either)...

Ah yes. The big talker behind a message board. Get you face to face with one of these guys and I'm sure you'd say the same thing. Right?

Totally not surprised you'd bang that out on your keyboard - painting an entire group with the same color after the actions of one.

Poor sports and fit-throwers exist in all sports and clearly - even outside of athletics.

Yes.

I really doubt Cael would ever throw a medal on the ground and walk out. This guy must have been quite the person in general.

I don't necessarily agree with you but I do think that certain behavior is accepted and even encouraged for wrestlers that would make a pariah out of an athlete in a different spot. That said, it's a pretty brutal sport and takes a different makeup to be successful.
