Are there any woodworkers out there and what magazines do you subscribe to to get plans and ideas out of? I am thinking about getting wood magazine I've gotten a couple from my dad and they seem to have good reviews and plans in them. Just wondering if anyone else uses a different source.

Isn't wood magazine also known as Playboy?

I used to be really into woodworking (in high school, mainly) and am trying to get back into it. It's been 10 - 15 years but WOOD magazine was a good one then :biggrin9gp:

I'm going to make a shameless plug for Woodsmith Magazine. We also have a PBS television show called "The Woodsmith Shop". Our magazine features detailed woodworking plans with a spattering of technique articles and NO ADS. You won't be disappointed. Check us out at Woodsmith - Woodworking magazines, plans, books, tips and TV show :)

I watch the Woodsmith Shop on PBS regularly and find it very useful and informative. I don't get the magazine but I imagine that would be the same.

Personally I get and like Workbench and This Old House. Any plans aren't high end. You generally have to buy those. But if you want to make some not so expert stuff these will do. Both have alot of cool articles that make you think about how you might do things in the shop. That's what I like.

+1 for Woodsmith magazine. There seems to be allot more content and better plans in Woodsmith magazine than most other woodworking magazines. I've subscribed to Wood magazine several times, have never been impressed with either the articles or plans, and it has way too many ads.

See what your local library has for woodworking subscriptions. You can browse there and get a feeling if any of them are what you are looking for.

here's my shamless plug for WOOD magazine

i work for the publisher of the magazine here in Des Moines and our customers of WOOD are really loyal to it. The website looks horrible, but that's because it's not one of our huge money makers.

here's a link to some free plans
Woodworking Plans

we also have digital editions now too on Zinio, which you can get on the ipad and other tablets too.

hope this helps!

Are you sure you get Workbench? Thought it went away and was replaced by something called My Home My Style which sucks.

I get Woodsmith, Shop Notes, Wood (all three Des Moines based), American Woodworker, and Woodworkers Journal. All have their plusses and minuses, but they seem pretty good for someone like myself with fairly basic skills.

I used to subscribe to Fine Woodworking and Popular Woodworking. Both are high quality publications, but tend to cater to woodworkers with a little higher skill level. I rarely if ever found projects in them that I was interested in making.

AW and WJ are getting to be the same way. I always thought somebody could make a killing with a magazine that had projects somebody with moderate skills and less than a $20,000 shop could make.

I currently subscribe to the woodsmith shop mag but want to check into another one may have to check out wood

That said, I guess I don't anymore. I have a whole pile of them that I refer back to all the time. I try to get whatever the publishing houses have when I need to rid myself of 2,000 airline miles.

In three years I would like to sell all of my woodworking tools. Bessey clamps, Delta 10" Unisaw 120/240 volt table saw, hand tools, workbench. I'll post when I'm ready to sell.
