Williams & Blum Pod: Cy-Hawk lumps & the rest of the season

Blum's comment about "altercations" has been the norm of this series since it began. The first game in Ames back in the 70's I saw some Hawkeye driving a gold VW bug down main street yelling his head off. Some ISU students caught him at a stop and turned the bug on its roof. Every single time I've been to Iowa City starting in 1978, I've seen fights, beer thrown on ISU fans, etc. Heck, the Hawk band manufactured a calamity the last time they were here. I have to admit that this game was the first where I didn't observe or hear any obnoxious fans at the tailgate (this time Haunted Forest) or in the stadium.

Sorry can’t justify the oh we play the same style so we will take the 1-7 VS Iowa and get wins elsewhere. Many other coaches find a way to beat similar teams all the time. Nobody is asking them change the offense for 1 week, but the game plan and approach surely can with the playbook they have. You make Iowa seem like they are peak Alabama in this podcast. Yea it’s a good defensive but it’s a slightly above average football team.

Iowa in my opinion is barely improved from last season. Their defense has taken a step back, but they are still good. Offense is slightly improved, but Cade is definitely not the savior everything thought he would be.

Spot on. And this drives me crazy how some of our fans make Iowa out to be like you say "peak Alabama".

In the Campbell era vs Iowa, some years they've been better on paper, some ISU has been, and some both teams have been about the same. But what's been the case in every game is that Campbell's been super conservative and played not to lose. And when you play not to lose, you usually lose.

I thought in 2019, at least to start the game Campbell did not play conservatively against Iowa. Early in the game, they had a trick play that scored from deep, the stadium was going crazy. Then we put together another good drive and had really Iowa off balance until Purdy fumbled at the 19 yard line. Despite that turnover, we had the momentum and were taking it to them, but then the weather delay happened and it gave Iowa a chance to regroup and settle down. Also in 2017, with a gunslinger like Parker, and skill guys like Butler, Lazard, and Montgomery, we were only conservative late in the 4th, Campbell trying to protect the lead, but before that we attacked them all over the field.

ISU had the lead later in the '19 game and couldn't field a punt.

In 2017 Iowa's defense wasn't very good so the space was there.

That said Slow Roll September makes it look like August camp was just some tackling and passing drills between speeches.

Lots of excuses to try and justify why our offense is a bad as it is. One thing for continually omitted was ISU offense was average (at best) against a terrible UNI team. That's the biggest indicator.

Exactly. The warning signs were there last week and a lot of people just brushed it off. Nothing has changed from last year. I thought it was evident from last season that this offense doesn’t win games, yet here we are once again.

Anyone think that maybe the reason why we have to play that way on offense is that we don't have enough playmakers? Just a thought, because we've seen this offense throw up lots of points before. Campbell always preaches players, formations, plays; we just don't have enough playmakers to sling it around the field.

Higgins is great, but all of our receivers have shown to have stones for hands. Iowa decided to put Cooper Dejean as a spy on Brahmer, our TE. That's what Iowa thinks about our skill position players.

Wasn't that the excuse last year?

Maybe our coaches either don't scheme for success or didn't address this with usage of the transfer portal?

You can be an arrogant and stubborn coach if you are winning.

ISU isn't winning.

we were behind when the two guys collided. The possession before that we should have had a first down in field goal range with plenty of time on the clock to drive for a TD, but the Big 10 official called a ghost holding call that brought it back. It was an absolutely terrible call. I thought the officials really helped Iowa late in the game in 2017 too.
