Why Mac is no longer employed by ISU

Mac was a great ambassador for ISU and the football program. I would like to thank him for everything he has done. I believe his downfall was not taking some of his assistants aside and having the hard conversations with them.

Here is the situation. Ryan Kock has been unstoppable with 180 yds on 32 carries. ISU has the ball on the Mizzou 2 yd line and it is 3rd down. I don't care if everyone in the stands knows what is coming, give it to the big guy up the middle, twice if you have to. Make them stop us. They had not done it all day. Instead, we run a play that takes us for a nine-yard loss. Even if they stop us at the goal line they would still have to run plays from their own end zone. I believe Dan should have been right in Barney's ear with what to call. Barney has been awful all year.

Berfore that play I was just repeating the montra: Don't get cute; give it to Kock up the middle.

After the game I told my wife I was extatic about the win, but I was still a little irked about that play call.

Cotton makes the calls but Dan shouldn't allow these calls. Especially when Barney had been making these calls all year, all year unsuccessfully... That is why Dan and Barney don't have jobs...

I hated the call more than anyone. I nearly feel down the stadium seats over it.

Many of you forget the similar call earlier in the game, the play before the TD pass to Blythe.

Cotton made the call. Dan hired Cotton. They're both responsible, but don't act like Dan calls the plays.

It wasn't just Mac and Barney. How could the entire staff fail to use the common sense to call timeout with 55 seconds left when Daniels was tackled on 3rd down at the 1/2 yard line? Had Mac not been bailed out by the ref, the coaching staff had essentially assured that we would have lost because there would have been essentially no time left to even run one play after a kickoff.

I also thank Mac for everything he has done, but I won't be missing these types of hairpulling decisions in the future.

I also couldn't believe they weren't calling a timeout. It was 4th down. A timeout does not help them. It helps us.

I tried running onto the field in the final minute, to see if I could call a timeout for ISU, being no one else was.

I was promptly stopped by security and told....

"Common sense is not allowed on this field, son."

You should have heard the radio guys describing it. They were trying not to over-react, but it was obvious that they were thinking, "I don't want to rip on Mac and the rest of the staff in their final minute at ISU, but, what are they doing?!"

People must be stuck in cruise control on these boards. I was pretty sure I wouldn't have to read another Mac bashing thread since he is fired. Wishful thinking on my part I guess.

No offense, but any coach deserves to be ripped on some of that stuff.

I can respect that, but I think ripping on him the past 2 months has been enough. I think it was a terrible call, I am just sick of hearing about it for most of the season. Just a personal annoyance I guess.

and JP continues to interview, enough. That was a DUMB call and we all knew it. I think it was a QB sack, why o why???

Unfortunately Bret is too slow to get around the corner when everyone knows he has the ball. We proved that about fifty times this year under the pro set. Maybe he needs to practice on that first step over the holidays.

It's not that Bret is too slow, it's our line does not block sweeps and zone read plays well at all. This line is best when blocking straight ahead, via quick hitters. That play was not the time to get cute.

In fact, how often did cute work for us this year? Once vs. Colorado on the pass from Flynn to Meyer?

I think that was it.
