Why isn't gas mileage improving for new vehicles?

There's a whole host of parts and potential failure mechanisms for EGR systems. I'd be curious to know what make and year your coworker was experienced with. I know we had some issues as recently as 2013, but our stuff has been pretty solid since then as far as I know. I'm a reliability engineer for PACCAR, parent company of Kenworth and Peterbilt. I focus more on trucks in development than current product, but I still hear about the big issues with our powertrain (not with the Cummins gear though).

Part of the reason emissions components get the brunt of the anguish is because we are forced to turn on a dash light when a malfunction is detected even if it has no effect on the drivability of the vehicle. If the offset on a NOx sensor is too high, dashlamp. If the SCR efficiency is too low, dashlamp. Even the ambient air temp sensor is part of the emissions equipment because it is used to control fueling, and a bad sensor can lead to excess soot or NOx production. Meanwhile, the driver doesn't notice any symptoms other than a dashlamp.

Yes it does increase costs. We have to answer not just to the operators but also to the regulatory agencies. Sometimes those two "customers" have competing requirements. If we don't meet most of the operators demands we sell fewer trucks. If we don't all of the agencies demands we sell 0 trucks because they won't certify our vehicles. And they are coming after gliders too. We tried to price them so high no one would buy them. Not sure how many we still sell, if any.
He's been saying it has been with even newer models on both the ag and construction side as he still has friends at the dealership (he's found out the guy they hired to replace him has been fired within the year even). but yes EGR equipment is the main issue for almost everything, even on the fire dept. im on there's been talk of removing it to be able to have a consistent Idle (EGR/emissions issues are a common issue on even new fire apparatuses).

For me, having everything under warranty makes it make sense for me. I particulaly wonder, with all the increased tech in cars, how much more expensive those later years of owning a vehicle could become, as with more sensors comes more things that can fail and bring costly replacement repairs.

Plus every 3 years i get upgraded tech, and in the current environment those are huge changes. I just traded in my 16 rogue for a 19 one and the improvements were very noticeable.

I have kept my cars to 200K without incident. Only the typical oil change, brakes, etc.

Someone once told me you spend more on cars, over your life, than you do your house. I get newer used and run them from there.

Easily spend more on cars. It probably isn't close. Cars are very expensive assets that also depreciate rapidly and require expensive maintenance. Especially now with low interest rates on mortgages.

I've driven each of my last 2 vehicles to 260,000+ miles (Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer). Hoping I can do the same with my new Explorer.

Can you do that? Per the talk here all of our vehicles are going to poop out their mechanical guts at 100K! :rolleyes:
 
Really? Personally, I am actually 30K+ a year on my car. Wife's car is 7 years old at 130K. Work, kids, vacations, ISU games, life all add up.

I pride myself on thinking "big" but all these normal things never registered... No kids, just a simple commute, usually fly between cities but now it's very obvious the flaws in my thinking.
