Why is it so difficult to say Iowa State?

Seriously, Iowa State is in the Big 12 and has been relevant the past few years in basketball and football. Yet, somehow national sports 'experts' still can't consistently say the name right. Trent Johnson called us the Hawkeyes, Pablo Torre on Around the Horn called us UNI yesterday, and Michael Wilbon called us Ohio State today. I don't understand what's so difficult about getting the name right.

ignorant. a lot of people don't even know where the state of iowa is.

same reason I dont know the difference between la-monroe and la-lafayette and la tech. important in home state worthless elsewhere.

...and to think i chose this life.

I can't think of another school in the country where this happens. People seem to keep Kansas and Kansas State straight. Then again, I'm biased, and I make sure I get the schools right since I know what it's like to be called by my rival's nickname.

This is true. When I was in high school we had a show choir competition in the Chicago suburb of Mudalein (sp?). Our hosts asked us where Iowa was. When we informed them it was the state directly west of Illinois they were confused, because they always thought that Kansas was directly west of Illinois.

The only reason we are getting so much attention in the media right now (causing these screw ups) is because of our loss to Wichita State Monday. If we never lost to them because of the refs, this wouldn't be an issue.

I grew up in Nebraska. My family didn't follow sports. I graduated from Iowa State in 2000. Two years ago my mother called me to ask if I was a Cyclone or a Hawkeye because she saw a sweatshirt she wanted to buy for my birthday. We are a unique brand.

I'm from Northern Minnesota and about 3 times a year someone says "Hey you go to Iowa don't you?". At first it was kinda amusing, now it just really pisses me off.
