With Teddy out for 2016 and possibly part of 2017, who do you want to see as the Vikings quarterback? Do we go hunting for a veteran backup? Do we try and poach an unproven youngster with promise? Do we stick with what we have?

Poll includes the options I've seen suggested the most, but feel free to throw some wildcards in as I wouldn't be too surprised to see Zimmer make a bold move.

I say make a play for McCarron. Offer a 4th round pick, maybe. They're talking Bridgewater's recovery could impact next season too, so they need to get someone with upside. Can't just be a stopgap. AJ's shown enough that he could be a longer term solution, if needed.

2nd choice would be Glennon

My pick is for McCarron. The Vikings need to kick the tires on one of the "high-upside" back-up QBs in the league.ESPN had an article yesterday saying they need to address QB in the upcoming draft or free agency regardless, add in the fact that they have an aging running back and a young and talented defense that is still under contract. The Vikings have the Dolphins 3rd and 4th round picks in this upcoming draft so they could deal that 3rd rounder and maybe another late-round pick for McCarron and still be positioned to have a decent 2017 draft.

I feel really bad for Teddy, but since when did he become this stud QB that the Vikings can't win without? He wasn't a top 20 QB last season. I know he's young and the hope is that he will improve, but they won games last year with their running game and defense. I think a veteran QB like Hill that has been in the franchise can come in and do what he needs to do for them to still go to the playoffs. I really do.

The Bengals are not parting with AJ. He played well when Andy went down last year so that is an absolute pipe dream.

Sanchez is probably the most likely candidate and he pry won't see the field until halfway thru the season, depending on the health/play of Hill.

The Vikes are high on Taylor Heinicke, had he not putt his foot thru a window this off-season he would have competed to for the #2 spot. Sounds like he will be practicing in 3 weeks so they may roll the dice with Hill and hope Taylor picks up where he left off prior to his injury.

Backup QB's are becoming more and more valuable, the Vikes aren't going to be able to pull a halfway decent back up without giving up at least a second round pick. And that is more for 2017 because lets be honest, anyone coming in would have zero experience with the WR corps/Norv's system.

There isn't a Brett Favre walking thru that door.

Hind sight its 20/20 but they should have pursued Nick Foles harder when they had the chance. At least he could have gotten some PT for the Vikes in preseason games.

Whoever they get, I hope that they take their time in bringing him in. Shaun Hill is a solid enough game-manager, that knows the offense that he could keep us in games for the first couple/few weeks. Then bring in McCarron/Glennon/Whoever, after they have had time with the playbook, learned how players move and react, and has their feet under them a little more, rather than just throwing him to the wolves right away.

I like Shaun Hill as a back up, and don't doubt he can be good enough to not lose us games, but I just don't think that he can last a whole season.

Statswise, you've got a point. But look at some analytics, and it tells a different story. Pro Football Focus is a very respected analytic site and they're very high on him.

Not to mention this preseason, I know its the preseason, but his long ball accuracy was very good in the 20 passes we saw during true game time. Not saying he was going to jump up to being a top-5 QB in this league, but he was definitely making all the right moves to make a leap this season for sure.

Completion percentage and accuracy often go hand-in-hand for a quarterback, but they are different and calculated separately.

Teddy Bridgewater stated at the start of this season that he had a goal of completing 70 percent of his passes. Bridgewater’s final tally in his second year was 65.3, which ranked ninth in the NFL and was up from his 64.4 rate as a rookie.
...
Matt Vensel of the Star Tribune noted that when analytics site Pro Football Focus reviewed the film and ruled out drops, purposeful throwaways and passes batted down at the line of scrimmage, Bridgewater’s accuracy percentage was 79.3, ahead of Cousins, Russell Wilson, Sam Bradford and Tom Brady.

I love pro football focus but I think you have to take that ranking and put it in perspective. A great running game can/should make a QB look pretty good. The Vikings had the 4th best rushing attack in the NFL last year. That lead to some nice PA pass looks for Teddy. It's not a coincidence that he was 12 spots higher for NFL QB's passing off the play action pass vs when he didn't pass of the play action pass. 10th when he used PA and 22nd when he didn't. That's how Pro football focus has him a top 15 QB but also tells me he greatly benefits from AP. I just don't see how Hill can't get the same benefit and do what Teddy did. Check down (Teddy had one of the lowest YPC in the NFL) and don't lose the game for your team.

This isn't like when Romo went down for the Cowboys last year. Romo is a top 5-10 QB and the Cowboys defense wasn't great. They needed a guy like Romo to make the playoffs. Vikings are in a much better spot where they are built to handle a loss like this.

I mean, I guess the Vikes did win 10 games with Christian Ponder and an inferior defense in 2012, but have you seen Shaun Hill's arm strength this preseason? Dude makes Teddy's arm look like a cannon in comparison. Plus, I don't see Hill's statuesque pocket presence holding up behind this offensive line all year.

I agree for this season, but if Bridgewater isn't all the way back by the start of next season (or ever, for that matter...sorry guys) they need a long term Plan B. Ideally the Vikes could get a young backup with upside like McCarron or Glennon. But I don't think either of them will be available for anything less than a king's ransom. If they're not comfortable with Hill their most realistic trade partner is Cleveland and Josh McCown. Maybe flip a trade pick with conditions to bump it up, like he has to play a certain % of offensive plays and/or win the NFC North. Then they can draft a QB next year and go into camp with a hopefully near 100% Teddy, a steady vet in McCown, and a decent rookie prospect.
