Over the past I have held many discussions pertaining who we would be most compared to in the Big 10.
The reason this always comes up is,strength of schedule as it compares to the BIG 12. Let me explain,
Many Big 10 fans believe that Iowa's schedule has more to do with the talent and coaching of the team, rather than the teams they play. I contend that it actually has more to do with the teams they play (or better yet who they don't play.) that makes 6+ wins more reachable thus allowing the Hawks to reach more bowl games the Iowa State. If that is the case, and to my point/question, if Iowa State were to be compared to the teams in the Big 10 that Iowa plays who would they be, and why? Go....

In terms of just last year I'd say going with Sagarin is as good an indicator as anything since the schedules are so wildly different in college football and it's almost impossible to really know.

I see similarity to MD, modest success a few years ago, downhill since, new coach who is really bringing in a new class of recruit. MD will be a beast in a few years if the staff can coach a lick, similar to us also.

The Big 10 is so watered down now, it's really hard to say. I don't think we are as bad as the worst teams in the Big 10, but we obviously are a long ways away from the tops in that league. I think, since we proved we can play Iowa tough year in and year out, we have potential to be somewhere around mid pack in the league, just because we'd get a few more games against teams that were at least at our level.

That being said, our ability to piss a game down our leg the last few years, makes me think you'd have to lump ISU in with the bottom 5 or so in the Big 10, until we were able to prove otherwise.

In my heart, I feel we'd have pulled off a few more games with a more slack schedule, but looking at it honestly, I just don't see how ISU would have really done any better in the Big 10 last year. So yeah, we'd be somewhere in the 10th/11th range.

Minnesota, Indiana, Purdue, Maryland, Rutgers, Northwestern, Illinois. If you exclude Football the list grows substantially , but sadly we can't exclude our woeful football tradition.

Edit: I actually had a hard time naming everyone in the B1G at first. Who am I missing? Iowa, PSU, Neb, Wisconsin, MSU, Mich, OSU...
