Peter Gammons penned an column today discussing Geovany Soto for MVP:

So who should be the frontrunner in either league? Does it matter if the team is a winner? I don't watch the NL enough to make a solid judgment, but I'd have to think Utley would be right there.

The AL is basically a race between Hamilton, Quentin, Dye and Youkilis.

There is no way that you can't include Ian Kinsler in that list.

Totally forgot about him, but do you award MVP to a guy on a team that will miss the playoffs?

Than why would you have added Hamilton in your initial post?

And yes, you can win the MVP w/o your team making the playoffs. IMO baseball is the only sport that this can happen in. Can't happen in football and basketball

Because the media loves his story.

I don't think Soto is the NL MVP but he is a lock for rookie of the year and the Cubs MVP I think. I think it's nuts looking at this now how the Cubs were so starved for a good catcher last year while this kid tore it up in AAA before they finally gave him a serious look.

He may not be too far of a reach for MVP though, he has handled the Cubs pitching staff very well for a rookie and factor in that he and Brian McCann of the Braves are basically neck and neck for offensive numbers at catcher in the NL. It is kind of wide open in the NL for MVP right now. If it wasn't for Ryan Howard's .235 batting average all his power numbers would have made him the front runner for it right now I think.

Made it to one I-Cubs game last year, and it was pretty obvious that Soto had the talent to take the job from Kendall.

A friend of mine at work was asking before the season, "How will you guys win without a catcher?" I told him that we had the best catcher coming that we've had in quite a while, and he said, "Who?" He could not, for the life of him, think of who Soto was, September call-up or not.

He knows now.:yes::yes:

Soto did come from nowhere offensively prior to 2007. He didn't show any signs prior to 2007 that his 2007 season was possible. The Cubs lucked out...

Does Quentin really have that much better of a resume than Morneau?
Sure Carlos has a few more HR's, but Justin is hitting 16 points higher.
And when the Twins run away with the division over the next few weeks, CQ will be an afterthought.

Quentin has 14 more home runs.

They're similar, but power numbers go a long way towards determining who wins.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch, either.

I'm also surprised that Morneau hasn't gotten more notice. If he had continued his July performance, he would be running away with it. His numbers in Aug are hurting him even though he is still the leader in RBI's for players on contending teams. Part of his current struggle is that more teams are pitching around him. This strategy might be abandoned soon if Young and Kubel keep swinging the bat like they have in recent games.
