I just saw that we matched 2001's win total and am kind of surprised we matched that teams win total. Both teams are obviously very talented but 2001 was a team that was great on the defensive end and this years team is great on the offensive end. Either way great rosters for both teams and very well coached.

What's the point of a comparison ? Enjoy the ride today, and be thankful for the ride yesterday.

2001 team imploded from within. Players were sick of putting up with Larry and basically quit playing.
That said, both tans are capable ouch playing at a very high level.

Hard to say. Tinsley kept that team afloat against better competition than you see nowadays in college hoops but Niang, Kane, and Ejim were a helluva lot better than guys like Rancik, Shirley, Shane Power, Jake etc. Horton was a little bit of a wild card on that team too.

Tinsley vs Kane/Morris would be really fun to watch.

If we win today I'm going to go with this team over '01 regardless of the NCAA outcome. Big 12 wasn't as strong that year either.

In '00 the Big 12 was a little stronger than the second title team and we still just absolutely crushed the league and rolled through the tournament until losing to the champs in close road game, we'd need a Final Four run this season to be in the same league as the '00 team.

I loved that team and it's maybe my favorite backcourt ever. But watching them play Baylor in the Big 12 tournament...it was very similar to Iowa vs Northwestern a couple days ago.

The 2001 team was better. They were a better road team and beat Kansas twice. Plus, they won the conference. We finished tied for third this year, although I agree the Big 12 was really tough this year.

However, if the two teams played each other I'd be tempted to take this year's team, but this year's team would have trouble guarding both Tinsley and Sullivan.

Tinsley would have his hands full with Kane. Naz or Monte could chase Sullivan. I don't know, I didn't pay much attention back then but the conference wasn't very good so winning the conference on it's own isn't reasoning. Also, this team actually seems to like each other instead of hating each other. The coach seems to like them and the team seems to like the coach which, to me, is significant. I don't think that team was as good as this one. Their ceiling wasn't as high for sure.

I may get banned for this....but one difference will be Kane will try to score as many points as he can in tournament games.
That said, I like both teams for what they are. Different and both good. Of course, the 2000 team would be 31-1 right now with the same schedule.

Thats what I thought was so interesting about the records being the same win total wise. Very different teams and the competition is much much better this season. It truly does show how athletic we are this year that despite not a great amount of height we are doing very well. Loved watching the 2001 team until the end of season collapse that is but of course we found out that had a lot to do with the players just being mentally done with Larry E.

...can't believe the 2000 team hadn't been brought up.
That was by design, I would assume. He is specifically talking about two teams that have the exact same amount of wins and foregoing discussion of the 2000 team because they are the clear front-runners.

I would have loved to see Fred coach the 2001 team. Can you imagine what he would have done with Tinsely? Holy cow.

Not as flashy but he will have another 3 seasons with Monte Morris. Morris was picking pockets and running the game against KU late yesterday. He drove the dagger into KU getting those steals and loose balls late and pushing the ball.

I think if Fred was coaching us in 2001 he probably would have found a wig and goggles to hide his identity as he subbed himself in from time to time lol. But agreed the spacing he could have given Tinsley would have been scary for the other teams. Heck Shirley became a serviceable shooter after he graduated so I would imagine that he could have learned to do that sooner while at ISU under Hoiberg.

The wheels fell off in Austin in 2001. This year, they just shook off the loss in Waco. Im going with this years team. They've played a much tougher schedule with a shorter bench. I still love Larry's teams though.
