MLB: When did the Cubs clinch?

Yeah, it is a good think Milwaukee is on a slide also...the Cubs are looking really bad.

Kinda like the last week of the season last year where they couldn't win a game against the lowly Marlins to clinch the division...

Luckily, either could Milwaukee.

Slumps happen, that's why they play 162. To this point, the Cubs have slumped less than most, and that is why they find themselves in a comfortable position.

Didn't they just win like 7 in a row, and now they have dropped 4? So they've had a bad week. Everyone has. They will come out of it just in time for playoffs. Don't want to get too hot, too early.

It's pretty uncanny that pretty much the entire team (except DeRosa) is struggling at the same time. They are back to their old ways of just trying to hit HR's every at bat. Even when the wind is blowing in 20 mph. At some point, they're going to have to get the bats going again. A day off followed by a three game series in Cincinnati may be just what the doctor ordered.

Also, it's pretty nice to decrease the magic number three games while on a five game losing streak. Thank you, Mets!

Yep luckily my Mets just sweep the Brew Crew for them. So much for them being great against starting southpaws.

I don't think I'd go so far as say comfortable.

Problem will be the stretch. Cubs only have 6 home games left versus the Brewers 13. Quite the advantage. Not that they've been playing particularly well at home, dropping 5 of the last 6.

But home field advantage is still an advantage.

Up until this week I was pretty comfortable with where the Cubs were but with Zambrano skipping out on his MRI yesterday and Harden "resting" until next Wednesday plus the offense in a slump now I'm a little concerned. If Z is done for the year which I have a bad feeling he is because guys don't skip MRI's if they know everything is fine just hope that Harden is OK because I don't like the prospect of going into the playoffs with Dempster, Lilly, Marquis, and Marshall as the 4 man rotation. I wouldn't be surprised to see Samardzija get a start here soon too since up until his call up he was a starter and Guzman take his spot in the pen since he just came off Tommy John surgury. I was kind of hoping for a healthy pitching staff going into the playoffs so they can leave guys like Howry and Wuertz off the playoff roster but if Marshall and someone else has to step into the rotation now the bullpen roles change too.

I'm staying optimistic, but there are hints here of a classic Cubbie collapse:sad:. I still believe that this is a special team, going through a quick down stretch. Hopefully, they are just getting this out of their system before the postseason. At the same time, I can see where people could potentially lose faith or start to get worried. After all, it isn't paranoia when we have 100 years of history to back us up.

It is beginning to look like once again no one wants to win the division. At least for the Cubs, every time they lose, Milwaukee and St. Louis loses as well. But now if Houston continues to play well (they've won 8 in a row!) they might overtake everyone for the Wild Card...again.

They just have to gut their way through this stretch and not forget what got them this far. Every team is beat up and a little tired right now. I'd rather see them slumping at the beginning of September instead of the end.

I'm hopeful they'll win the division, but if they don't they still should make the wild card. They've got a darn tough stretch of games this month however...

I'm trying to stay optimistic but look as some of the short series rotations you'd have to face in the NL.

Brewers: CC, Sheets, Suppan
Dbacks: Webb, Haren, Big Unit
Mets: Santana, Pedro, Perez
or Phillies: Hammels, Blanton, Moyer

The Dbacks rotation worries me the most. Cubs with Z would have the toughest 3 or 4 starters to go against but I'm not counting on Z at the moment and let's cross our fingers Harden is OK too. Dempster, Lilly, and Marquis don't really stack up well if that is what the Cubs have to work with. Plus all teams in the NL playoffs have a very good lefty in the rotation which the Cubs have had tough times with lefties at times this season which is odd for such a right handed dominant lineup.

This losing streak will just get Cubs fans re-adjusted to disappointment. You know the season isn't going to end pretty.

Houston is 6.5 back with 22 to play. With the way the Cubs and Brewers have played all season, not very likely. Yes, they both have been loosing, but they are not going to loose every game from here on out.

Either the Cubs win the division and the Brewers are the wild card or vice versa.
