What the heck is a VPN?

Well, I could be wrong, but I believe a VPN is an old, old wooden ship used during the Civil War era.

I host my own VPN on my TP-Link router. I use it to do exactly as you said when I travel.

I pay for these streaming services and it’s BS to block me because I happen to be out of the country (or in Puerto Rico, which IS our country).

You can buy a used TP-Link router for around $50. Hosting your own makes it very unlikely the service will identify and block you.

Is it too good to be true??? The perfect phone? The perfect privacy protection???

Yes, no, no.

The Unplugged Phone looks like it's just an alternative. You'd be giving your same info out to a company different than Apple, Google.

It looks to me like it's mostly marketing to make someone feel good about security.
That's exactly what they have on their page with some details about the phone. "Always feel safe with LibertOS" and "Feel safe with the UP Phone. Anywhere, anytime, in any circunstances. Emergency passcode. Set a unique code that wipes all your data and alerts your emergency contacts"

Did you see the part where it’s not made in China

Is that VPN router independent of your primary router, or are you suggesting TP Link because it has VPN server as a configurable option?

Anything 'open-source' is better than anything corporate. Even Apple IOS' core is open source. It's quicker to debug, cheaper to build, and there are fewer 'hooks' to penney ante you. That said, they're behind by quite a bit. And, there'll still be costs to recoup (e.g applications). But, not as many. I suspect an advertising model to cover hardware development.

Rust seems like a pretty popular language among techies, though not very entrenched in the industry.

This, in my professional opinion, is something to keep an eye on. Expect 'patches'. Maybe not as much as Chrome, but regular nevertheless.

I'll do a deeper dive when I can find a spare day.

Since that post, my TP-link router started throwing an error on IOS devices that the TLS version was too low. I believe it was an IOS or OpenVPN upgrade because windows didn’t have the issue.

It was bad timing because I discovered the problem as I was getting ready to go overseas.

To fix the problem, I ended up getting a CUDY wired VPN router and turned the TP-Link router into a wireless access point.

The new setup is working great on all devices.

Edit: the VPN router and AP are secondary devices from my main router.

Also the CUDY router was about $30.
