Were they actually a different set of helmets or was it a wrap or spray on existing helmets?

I think @1238576073jb answered the same question I had, here:
The chrome helmet was the white helmet with the chrome "coating" - worn twice (if memory serves me), at the Independence Bowl & @ K-State in 2019 - obvs, the bowl game was our last game of the season & we wore the black helmet in the next game (bowl vs ND) in 2019 - so white was made chrome, then refurbed after the season - those chrome finishes can be kinda **** - I'm sure they're improving as a lot more teams are wearing them more often, but they can often crack & flake, leaving the original helmet color exposed - check out the top of Monty's helmet - they're a neat one-off - although they need to come up with a better color mixture - these look pink in the sun

And since those two games were at the end of the year, they most likely went back to the factory for credit or a refurbish.

Edit here: per @jcisuclones, post #13: "These were donated by the Gridiron Club before the Liberty Bowl, so they aren't spray painted."

I know at the equip sales a few years ago, standard red and white helmets were like $200/250ish and red chrome were $400.
Good that they offered them for sale and got a small portion back monetarily.

The price of helmets varies quite a bit I think now. But the better helmets do cost more. I remember a couple of years ago when I was reading about VICIS helmets. I think the VICIS 1 was about $1500 when it first came out. The VICIS 2 is about half that cost for supposedly the same safety protection ($750 roughly).

"New helmets typically range between $120 and $450, but the average price of a varsity level helmet is around 2.5 times more expensive than that for youth helmets.

College football helmets cost $650 to $800 at Baylor University and around $620 at Mississippi State, according to a CBS Sports article.

Business Insider reports that the University of Nebraska pays about $350 on its helmets. Into this price, the decals are also included." [From a 2021 article, here]

I would say new helmets cost about $400 - 800, depending upon the model and order specs, generally, just a guess. This is why I don't think we will ever have 4 helmets for each player. Having 3 per player is expensive enough.

These were donated by the Gridiron Club before the Liberty Bowl, so they aren't spray painted.
Thanks for the info, again! I think you posted this to us before. We (I) forget easily. [I edited my post #2.]

Yeah, those were nice helmets, wrong color (too bright) but nice. They looked too good to be spray painted. I was surprised when I heard they might have been painted. Perhaps a few of them were. Who knows.

Chrome surfaces by nature reflect some of the colors and light around them so they will look different shades in different lighting and in different environments.

Definitely. And whoever selected the color should have taken this into account. It would have been better to have a helmet slightly darker appearing than the jersey/pant, versus what we got. They should have errored on the darker side.
