Everyone has been stating how needy we are for a PG but in my opinion we also need a center. If we had a center that could play on the inside just for rebounding it would allow royce white to move to the 4 which is clearly his natural position, and also move Ejim out to the 3 where he is clearly a natural for.

Royce is about 6'7/270 even undersized with length for the NBA PF but certainly great for ISU. I like Booker at the 5 with Royce. The issue IMO is a lack of glue guys and role players. Plenty of guys that want to score the ball though. I'm excited to have talent on the team again. Certainly excited about the one/two punch of White/Clyburn next year, but I am concerned we won't have the glue guys to go around them. The PG situation fixes itself next year with Lucious.

If we were a center away Fred Hoiberg would have recruited a center at some point in the history of him coaching here, but he hasn't. It is not in his plan to have a true center. /thread
Well Railey actually played last season, and from everything I have seen, the coaching staff feels he has made great progression into this season.
If I were Hoiberg, I might start Railey just to prove a point.
...and also to try anything different. Give Melvin a break and a chance to come off the bench.
It sounds silly, but a Point Guard literally would solve just about everything. And I'm not being sarcastic, at all.
Really? Because our biggest problem right now is our defensive strategy. Unless the pg is going to game plan with Fred, we're still going to have problems.

He's a playmaker first not a scoring minded guard which has to count for something. Right now we don't have any true PGs on the roster. I liked Tavon over the summer but he too is a guy that up til now just knows how to look to score.
I'm afraid ISU is just trying to recruit the highest rated players they can. A bunch of PFs and SGs really. I miss the Floyd days were we took advantage of the JUCO players better.

We are all over good PGs in the 2013 class.
Lucious is eligible next season. He's a true PG.
We are recruiting some top 2014 PGs too.
What we have now, is not what we will have in the future.
Railey at the 5 has the potential to solve match-up problems on D for ISU, and creates a ton of mismatches on offense (smaller 4 defending Royce, Railey clearing out the lane and hitting short jumpers, etc). To a lesser degree, this is the case with Booker, as well. I suspect (with no basis, other than intuition) that our minutes will vary quite a bit throughout the year based on which players create the most advantageous match-ups for us.
One thing I've noticed is that Royce doesn't necessarily have the greatest touch. Railey, for all his shortcomings has a nice jimmy. If he's improved his defense, (learned NOT to foul as much) he could be a nice compliment to Royce in the post, and possibly SOME rebounding issues.

An average big can help everyone else out. He doesn't have to be great, just effective. If he understands his role, he can elevate the other players' game. It is a team concept. I'm not saying Railey is going to be a game changer, but he can certainly help this team on the defensive end of the floor. To discount the effect a 6'10" player can have on the paint shows your ignorance on the sport. We're not asking for Wilt here.
A big in the paint allows everyone else to be more aggressive whether that means pressuring the ball or getting into passing lanes. Having a big that can contest a shot in the paint is an equalizer that this team needs. Too many layups and players going right down the middle of the lane last night.
