Manager Mike Quade officially named Randy Wells as his fourth starter on Friday, while also confirming that James Russell and Jeff Samardzija have made the staff.
That leaves one opening on the 12-man staff for either Carlos Silva, Braden Looper, Casey Coleman or Marcos Mateo.
As for Wells, Quade joked: "We gave him a map today to make sure he knows Chicago is northeast of here.... We'll put him on the charter to make sure."
Wells erroneously said last week that the Cubs would be headed Northwest after leaving Arizona.
"He's the best," Quade said. "He's had a marvelous spring."
Wells starts today against Seattle at HoHoKam Park.
Quade hasn't named his fifth starter yet, though Andrew Cashner and Silva are the two finalists. Cashner will be on the team either way.
"Cashner is on the club," Quade said. "What we don't know for sure yet is (his spot). We're looking hard at him as the fifth starter, but there are other scenarios there where that doesn't materialize. So basically, we're looking for one pitcher."
Silva will either be a starter, reliever or be released, with the Cubs obligated to pay all but the major league minimum from his $11.5 million salary in 2011.

Technically the Cubs have to pay all of Silva's salary (except the mlb minimum if the Cubs release him and another team picks him up), but the Mariners are paying the Cubs $5.5M this season as part of the Silva/Bradley trade so the Cubs are only paying him $6M net.

I'm glad that they spelled out Silva's position...

"Silva will either be a starter, reliever or be released"

I was worried that he was going to be running the scoreboard or be the new public address announcer.

No surprise on this one at all. The real question all spring was who was going to be the 5th. I'm hoping it is Cashner; he has earned it. Only downside is the walks, but he has shown they have not affected his other numbers too much.

Does it matter in the end? I think no matter who is pitching, the basement of the NL Central is gonna look the same.

Ill be the first to admit the Cubs have had a pretty sub-par spring. However, I was not the one talking **** while my team has been pretty bad.

Agreed. No matter who the Cubs throw out there as the 4th and 5th starter there is still no way they'll be worse than the Astros or Pirtates.

As much as I hate the cubs...I have to admit that CyJack has a point.
