WBB: Bridget Carleton's future with the Connecticut Suns to be decided Thursday

The fact this is even a discussion is proof the WNBA needs to do something. Expand, increase roster size...something. If you are trying to grow your brand, getting beloved college players like Bridget and Gustafson on a roster is very important.

No kidding. You pull in WNBA fans by bringing in college WBB fans, and that doesn't work when there are so few players in the league.

NBA: 30 teams x 15 players = 450
WNBA: 12 teams x 12 players = 144

There are more STARTERS in the NBA than players in the WNBA.

But it's a chicken and egg deal. Until the WNBA can operate at a profit, it's hard to justify expansion. But expansion is what would help it turn a profit.

One thing that is probably helping a little bit is more teams moving to or originating in non-NBA arenas. Even the most successful WNBA teams can't come close to regularly filling an NBA arena. Full arenas help build the brand and keep revenue to cost ratios sustainable. There are still 5 franchises with 18,000K+ arenas. The Lynx (playing in the largest WNBA arena, Target Center at 19,000+) now have a curtain system that allows them to hide most of the upper deck and create a more cozy environment.

Yes and no. To keep anyone, you have to get rid of someone. And in such a small group of players, there are some really, really good players that would be hard to cut just to take chances on new college players.
 
Incredibly difficult to make a roster, especially given the draft in the 2nd round. Heck, even Megan Gustafson got waived by Dallas yesterday. Looking at the waiver wire, at most 1-2 new players make a team each year...and many have zero rookies as they pick up other veteran players that are waived from other teams.
 
Okay, can move ahead with setting something up to see Bridget play. The Sun play the Lynx twice this summer at Target Center. First is June 14 and than later in the summer on August 9th. The Wolves/Lynx ticket manager has been bugging me to set up an ISU ticket deal to see Bridget and I have been telling him to wait and see if see makes the roster and she has. :D

So look for something set up through the alumni club here for the August 9th (Friday night) game. Twins have a home stand that weekend so folks buying up from Iowa can make it a sports weekend. Fireworks after the baseball game that Friday night also. Will share details later here on CF. Hopefully we will get to see her actually play, did a similar setup for Allison Lacey but she didn't play in the game.

Sadly, the Loons are on the road that weekend.

And Goose is a good player although I still feel that her stats were mostly due to her size in Big 10.
Courtney Paris was waived several times too including her first season after she won Big 12 POY IIRC.
Problem with WNBA player development is their short season: every game matters and therefore you need players who are ready to compete at extremely high level. Look at our Alison Lacey - she had to sit behind Sue bird and Svetlana Abrosimova at Seattle Storm.

Agree. Saying you made the top 144 players in the world is a terrific accomplishment. I have a feeling that Megan G will get another opportunity too.

Yup it always depends on the team’s need. Look at our Brittany Wilkins and Chelsea Poppens.

And a short bench. With only 12 roster spots there isn't a lot of room to carry a player who isn't ready to contribute.

Interesting read about the Connecticut Suns male practice squad!

"The laid-back atmosphere belies just how surprising the scene might be to anyone who hasn’t played basketball at a high level: a gym of men competing for the opportunity to be beaten by WNBA players, for free. Registration for the tryout cost $20, and came with lunch and a ticket voucher. If they make the squad, they get a pair of shoes."
