Watching Football vs. Basketball

3.5 Hours From Trice
Kind of a random topic, but I'm wondering if anyone else feels the same in my age group (30)......or even out of my age group for that matter....

I grew up through HS playing all sports, but basketball was always my favorite, so I've always enjoyed following College and NBA bball the most. I also grew up to witness Michael Jordan's entire NBA career, so that was definitely a factor b/c he showed us all things we'd never seen before.

With that said, the older I get the more I've come to appreciate football and the less I'm interested in basketball as a whole. The "dunks" and "trifectas" are no longer as exciting in basketball for me. It just kind of feels like it's all been done by now and I just don't appreciate it as much as I once did.....although I will say, having Fred back in Ames makes things much more exciting for Cyclone Bball right now.

I've also come to appreciate how dynamic the plays can be in football versus bball. There are so many different plays that can happen in a football game, but basketball kind of seems like a repeat of the same plays throughout the game with only the last 5-10 minutes being very exciting to watch. Don't get me wrong, I still love some bball and always will, but it's lost a lot of luster throughout the years for me.

Yes.

Football is America's number 1 sport for a reason. It is very fun to watch.

I agree, it is our country's #1 sport and is the most exciting in general......but I'm more curious on whether or not other people who considered bball to be there #1 sport (for a majority of their lives) now feel the same way. Have a majority of former bball fans converted to football fans b/c that's now what's the most exciting or am I in the minority?

I'm also curious how many middle school and high school kids like bball now a days. I just don't see how it can be as appealing as it was when I was growing up with MJ, Magic, Bird, Dominique, Clyde, Shaq, Stockton, Malone, Mullins, Kemp, Barkley, Pippen, Robinson and on and on......BUT maybe it still is appealing to kids and I'm just getting old? ;)

32 years old. Use to love basketball. Now it's "meh" for me. I love football and this is coming from a guy who went to a high school that didn't even play football.

Up through junior high (1992-1993) I was a bigger basketball fan. At that point I still played basketball regularly, though it was unorganized driveway hoops. In junior high I got serious about football and never looked back. College football is really the only sport I can watch without having some rooting interest in the game. I don't watch any pro sports on TV except for the Packers, who I whole-heartedly root for but don't make it a point to watch every game.

Yup, that's even more of an extreme swing since you didn't even play football. I'm really starting to wonder if basketball will ever be as good as it was when I was growing up......especially NBA.

I'm 24 and I still love basketball the most. I have become more interested in football, but don't feel it will ever surpass basketball. I just love the constant action as there is a lot of down time in football. I think there is actually only about 13 minutes of play in 60 minutes of game time and it takes 3-4 hours to finish. The sports I played and enjoy are soccer, hockey, basketball and football. Football is the slowest sport of the group as the others are pretty constant action.

Yup, I just think bball was so much better when we were kids. It's kind of sad, but I feel pretty lucky to experience that. No one could mess with the Dream Team!!

I would still say that football edges out basketball barely for me. I care about both college football and basketball a lot. Can't say I really care for the NBA that much though.

See, I used to feel the same way, but now I think the 16 minutes of actual football play is better than the last 5-10 minutes of a basketball game, which is all I really care about (except Cyclone games of course).

When it comes to football, I can handle the break between plays, but I will admit the timeouts and reviews are killing me and any sort of momentum to the games

I refuse to make a choice. I love both of them.

Football's advantage is that it is very action packed and fun to watch. Also, it is easier to make a day out of it; tailgating, 3 hour game, etc. in the fall. The dead of winter is still king for basketball.

One of the reasons I like basketball is that it is harder to blow teams out; I feel like you see more upsets in basketball.

Not the biggest NBA fan though, and there's plenty of reasons for that

During football season football is my favorite sport and during basketball season basketball is my favorite sport. When neither is going, I miss basketball most and its been that way my whole life. I'm 23. (Disclaimer: when I say basketball, I mean college. Absolutely can't stand the NBA, probably couldn't even name all the teams)

If you feel like basketball is slipping, a little March Madness cures all:yes:

For me march madness hasn't been great either lately, but i think it is because this spring it will have been 7 years since we played in the dance. 7 years!

One thing I've noticed is I think people who have played basketball a lot tend to appreciate it more. For someone who hasn't watched or played it much, it can all kind of seem the same, but with all the experience I have with the game, I really enjoy sitting down and appreciating all the subtleties and nuances that go into all the plays. I enjoy both a ton, but having said that, there is nothing more intense than a big time football game.

Agreed. Not only did I play much more football, but I actually coached junior high for 6 years. There is something vastly different between playing NCAA/Madden and actually calling plays on a sideline. Playing video games and watching ESPN absolutely do not give you a feel for the game like drawing up and scripting your own plays, making in-game adjustments, reading the other team on the fly, etc. I really appreciate football much more now having coached it than I ever did as a player.

I think for me, the big thing with Football, is the importance of every game. Even in an ISU season, losing that game we could have won could mean not going to a Bowl game. Or winning the big one against #2 means we are going to a bowl game. Even in college basketball, winning every game just isn't emphasized. The tournament is awesome, but the tournament itself, imo, somewhat diminishes the importance of the regular season. Not that BBall games aren't as fun to watch in general, it just never has that, "I can't miss this game" feeling to it. I'm a decent hockey fan as well, but I just don't get interested in the NHL that much until the second half of the season, where the games start to matter more on who gets in to the playoffs. In the end, I think it's the "once a week" thing for football that makes every game a little more exciting.
