It sounds like the new Vikings head coach will be Mike Zimmer. There is a lot of stuff going around on Twitter and Zimmer has been in Minnesota two days in a row now. Also heard from another source that Zimmer signed a contract last night. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it looks like Zimmer will be the new coach for the Vikings.

What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Zimmer is a heck of a defensive coach. The pieces that Minnesota has on the defensive side will fit in well in his 4-3 scheme. The guy also has a really good eye for defensive talent.
kind of a question mark on the offensive side of the ball. Hopefully he brings in a good coordinator.

Its offical:

Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter3mVikings are hiring Mike Zimmer as their HC, per league source.

I'm pleased. Expect the defense to improve. Will have to wait and see on the offense.

Janny,

What do you think Speilman does with the other big decision at QB?

They need to address the defense immediately. DE, CB, and LB are all needs. With their draft spot at 8, a lot of the tier 1 QB's will be taken by the time they get to pick. I'd guess at least 4 of them will be off the board already. That means they can reach for a QB (like they did with Ponder) or take the best available at another position. Personally, I'd rather they went with the latter route and go with one of the top linebackers like Barr or Mack to pair with Greenway.

One other point, defense is a greater need for Minnesota than offense. Minnesota's offense actually wasn't completely awful this year, at least compared with their defense. They were in the top half of the league in yards, points scored, and yards per play. On defense, they were dead last in points given up, and 2nd to last in yardage allowed.

QB is obviously the most visible need for the team, but an argument can be made that with even an average defense, Minnesota could have been a .500 team this year.

Easy solution at QB: Just put in Cordarrelle Patterson at QB and let him make all the plays.

I think that drafting defense is far more important than drafting a QB this year. Manziel is going to be an absolute bust in the NFL (has not shown the ability to read defenses, and lacks size + toughness), and Cassell can play well enough to get wins with that offense. If Bridgewater were available (and he won't be) I would be on board with drafting him, but it's not going to happen. He's the only QB in the NFL draft it makes sense for the Vikes to take in the first round.

I like this hire. Zimmer is a fiery guy who knows defense.

He's pretty awesome. He sort of gets lost in the shuffle amid the awfulness of this season but Patterson is fantastic. His numbers are pretty comparable to Harvin's rookie numbers when he won the rookie of the year. I'd say Minnesota made out pretty nicely in that trade, considering Harvin has yet to play full game for Seattle.

This. I'm actually okay with heading into next season with Cassell at the helm. Spend a 2nd day pick on a QB and coach him up, but focus mainly on the defensive side of the ball in the draft. Not saying they'd be a Super Bowl contender next year, but there's enough talent on the team to be respectable.

Defense is probably the most important thing.

I don't know how the Vikings are going to get a QB though.

at this point, I don't think they're going to. Not a good one anyway. It would take some pretty miraculous things to happen on draft day for them to move up to get one of the top QB's. That's not the end of the world, though.

I agree. I actually think the QB talent will be the same on the second day as the ones available after Bridgewater and Bortles are gone in the first round. Does anyone really feel good about the idea of drafting Manziel or Carr.

Draft D line or linebacker first round and find a QB later.

The thing that excites me about Zimmer is how his defenses put pressure on the QB. He runs a 4-3, but it will be a far cry from Minnesota's previous, passive Tampa-2 scheme. Zimmer attacks.
