Vaseline used to get an edge in a UFC match

even if there was vaseline put on GSP, it wasnt the difference in the fight. GSP is way stronger and just physically dominated BJ. maybe BJ would have made it to the 5th round and got TKO'd then haha

sounds like the guy who put it on GSP is gonna get fired though... im sure as a fighter you dont even know what your trainers are doing to you in the corner cuz you are just trying to get your breath and regroup for the next round.... i bet GSP didnt even know. hes not the kinda person who would knowingly cheat

I think this gif summarizes what happened pretty well.

It's hard to say it didn't make a difference. Not easy to go with your game plan, and BJ has great ability from his back with his flexibility. That's nullified if your legs are sliding off. Then you take a beating, then that sets the tone for the rest of the fight.

i know its going to be an excuse for BJ's camp and fans, but seriously. GSP is a lot better than BJ and a lot stronger. Im not even that huge of a GSP fan, but the guy is right up there with silva as the best pound for pound fighter in the world

This discussion reminds me of Burt Reynolds from Striptease.

However I cannot bring myself to look for a picture of that, I'm sure one of you won't let me down

GSP would still have won because of the size difference. However it's Bush league to do this and he should be disqualified for it. This is as bad as throwing spitballs in baseball, or using a nail file to file the ball down. Cheating is Cheating and as much as I like St. Pierre and Penn. St. Pierre cheated. The bad part is he did not even come close to needing to do so.

It took alot of guts for BJ to step in there against GSP.....knowing how much stronger and atheltic GSP is. I guess BJ thought his stand up skills would win the day....but he got schooled at that as well.

im not 100% convinced that GSP intended to cheat... like i said. you just let your corner do what they do, you dont tell them to put stuff on you

I would think that any athlete would know if something like vaseline was put on his body and say "WTF, this isn't right!"

I don't think, "I didn't know" is a good defense. If that's what he ends up claiming.

At any rate. I don't think it would have made any difference, but it needs to be addressed.

I'm not sure if he intended to cheat or not, but ignorance generally isn't a good defense. Like geronimus said, it's impossible to tell the difference something like that could have made.

BJ's whole plan was to fight from the ground and his back because he knew GSP's stand up and kicks were so good so it did effect the fight in that manner.

As we were watching we kept noticing how BJ's legs kept slipping off GSP's shoulders whenever BJ moved in position for a triangle or arm bar.

Not saying GSP still wouldn't have won but it did put BJ at a disadvantage.

BJ's legs were slipping due to sweat as well... im just saying there are a lot of possibilities to what really happened, but what we all know is BJ would have lost no matter what

I know virtually nothing about either fighter, but from the pictures I saw the cornerman intentionally apllied the vaseline to his shoulders and back. Why put it on if it doesn't matter? If for no other reason than the appearance of impropriety you would think they would stay away from something like that if it really didn't serve a purpose.

You don't know that, we can all assume that, but there is no way to know the effects of it.

it served a purpose, but what im saying is that it really wasnt needed by GSP to win.

It sounds like you know a lot more about that sport than me, but I think it's pretty difficult to say after the fact that it wouldn't have mattered. If somebody dropped a roll of quarters in his glove could we say it wouldn't have mattered anyway, he didn't really need it and he would have won without it? Who knows, if the other guy could have gotten a better grip he might have been able to catch him and finish it.

Especially in a sport like this, you can be getting owned every round and then catch the guy and end it in the last 10 seconds. Penn was getting worked, but who knows?
