This is one of those random friendlies that pops up during the year for no readily apparent reason. You could say that it's a warmup for the September Hex matches, but those are still about 3 weeks away. Klinsmann has called 23 players into a 3 day camp in Sarajevo to get ready for this match. It will be on TV on ESPN2 on Wednesday at 1:30 central. Here's the roster...

GOALKEEPERS (3)
:Cody Cropper (Southampton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton)

DEFENDERS (7)
: John Anthony Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg), Tim Ream (Bolton Wanderers)

MIDFIELDERS (8)
: Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (Roma), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Danny Williams (Reading)

FORWARDS (5)
: Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich)

There are some new names on there which is nice to see: John Anthony Brooks, Cody Cropper, Aron Johannsson, and Bobby Wood. The last I heard was that Johannsson will not be available to play in the match as the US is waiting on FIFA to finalize his one-time switch from Iceland, but participating in the training will still be beneficial.

I'm curious as to whether Donovan's absence means anything. JK called in a couple MLS players, specifically addressed why he wanted to give Dempsey a break, but no word on Landon. I wonder if this means that LD has more work to do in Jurgen's eyes.

And for those that are interested here's Bosnia's roster...

GOALKEEPERS (3): Asmir Begovic (Stoke City), Asmir Avdukic (FK Borac Banja Luka), Jasmin Fejzic (VfR Aalen)

DEFENDERS (5)
: Ermin Bicakcic (Eintracht Braunschweig), Emir Spahic (Bayer Leverkusen), Toni Sunjic (FC Zorya Lugansk), Mensur Mujdza (SC Freiburg), Ervin Zukanovic (Genk)

MIDFIELDERS (9)
: Miralem Pjanic (AS Roma), Senad Lulic (Lazio), Sejad Salihovic (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim), Adnan Zahirovic (VfL Bocum), Elvir Rahimic (CSKA Moscow), Haris Medunjanin (Gazientepspor), Miroslav Stevanovic (Elche), Zvjezdan Misimovic (Guizhou Renhe), Avdija Vrsajevic (Hajduk Split)

FORWARDS (3)
: Edin Dzeko (Manchester City), Vedad Ibisevic (Stuttgart), Edin Visca (Istanbul BB)

Landon was clearly the best player on the field in the Gold Cup. Leaving him off the WC team would be a huge mistake.

I agree with this completely. Whether you see him as a clear-cut starter or a super-sub type player, the US is a better squad with Landon in the mix which is why I though it interesting that he wasn't included for this friendly. Obviously, it doesn't really matter if he plays against Bosnia. Maybe Klinsmann is throwing Arena a bone by letting LD stay with the Galaxy after he called Omar into the Gold Cup team & then basically didn't use him. But you have to think that if Landon is going to be in the picture for Brazil, he's got to be called in for the September qualifiers, right?

If JA Brooks, Aron Johannsson, and Bobby Wood all make it on the field at the same time I'm confident my head will explode. They are like fictional characters to me, I've heard tons about them and even seen occasional highlights but they are always blurry and in another language. Actually getting to see them would be awesome.

I'm pumped for Cody Cropper too, I remember seeing him in a U-23 (or maybe U-20?) game and he looked good. He should have a good chance to compete with Bill Hamid and Sean Johnson in the 'next generation' of keepers.

In the head-scratcher category: Tim Ream? I've heard he isn't even making the bench at Bolton. Maybe Klinsy just wants a chance to see him in training but from that group of defenders the starting CBs just have to be Cameron and Brooks, right? At this point couldn't someone like George John see a call-up for this kind of match?

Oh and I don't think we should read too deep into Landon not getting called. I'd bet Arena asked Klinsmann to not call him to help the Galaxy stay in the playoff hunt (BTW anyone see his hat trick last night!?). And if anything though I think the lack of a call-up means Landon's spot is secure and Klinsmann saw what he needed to in the Gold Cup.

Cropper was the keeper for the U-20 team that just played in the U-20 World Cup. I just looked it up and Cody turned 20 in February. He's already over in Europe with Southampton and you'd have to think that he's got a good shot of being the guy once Howard & Guzan move on. I highly doubt that he sees the pitch in this match, but holy crap it's gotta be pretty cool to get called into a camp and train with the two baldies.

Johannsson is good to go. FIFA has completed his one-time switch. I don't know if we'll see him tomorrow, but he's eligible to play at least.

I think Klinsmann is letting Landon settle in a little bit. He took 4 months off, played with the US and is now just starting to gel with the Galaxy. I think he needed to be left off this team to help get in a routine and be ready for the September WC qualifiers. I agree with Otter I wouldn't read too deep into this.

I don't have to work today so for others like me or people just taking an appropriately long 'lunch break', I give you the beers of the day according to Free Beer Movement:
First, Middle Ages Brewing Company of Syracuse, New York and their "Dragon Slayer" Russian Imperial Stout.Described by the brewery as "strong, chocolatety and aggressively hopped with finest English hops." Yum.
Next up is New Holland Brewing Company of Holland, Michigan and their "Dragon's Milk" Bourbon Barrel Stout. Described as a "stout with roasty malt character intermingled with deep vanilla tones, all dancing in an oak bath." Taking the work of the "Slayer" and adding a bunch more boozy flavor to it.
