Misc: "US won't win the 2014 world cup" per Klinsmann

I think Klinsmann and the team know what realistic goals are, yeah it sounds a little weird to hear him actually say they won't win the cup, but we all know that they know as much is true. We've accomplished the goal of being regulars in the World Cup which 20 years ago would have been seen as a pipe dream, now we need to consistently get out of the group phase and maybe win that first knockout game.

I like the quote, the talent gap is there and Klinsmann would know best.

“We cannot win this World Cup, because we are not at that level yet,” Klinsmann told me over lunch in December. “For us, we have to play the game of our lives seven times to win the tournament.”

I don't like the timing .... it would have been better served once we were out of the Cup.

Somewhat like TCU saying they wouldn't win the Big XII title this year.

An inconvenient truth, but a truth nonetheless.

Soccer is a different sport than most Americans are used to. The hype occurs on the field during the match.

Nothing wrong with being realistic. I would be happy if we win the World Cup but it'll never happen unless stars really aligned for us. I'll be happy if they can qualify from the Group. It'll be huge achievement surviving that group.

I liked the article. That quote is drom December, so it isn't like it just happened. I thought the part about Kobe Bryant and Landon Donovon were particularly thought provoking.

And he did say "yet." That would indicate that they are working to get to that level and hope to be there in the future.

Ghana is a must must must win. Can't tie them. Best case scenario we obviously beat Ghana and Portugal and can stomach a loss to Germany. Otherwise we'll need something like:

US beats Ghana
US ties Portugal
US ties Germany

5 points

Ghana ties Portugal
Ghana loses to US
Ghana loses to Germany

1 point

Portugal ties US/Ghana
Portugal loses to Germany

2 points

Germany wins out

9 points

Sorry fairweather fans, we're in full rebuilding mode right now. I will be happy if we win one game int his group or a couple draws would do me nicely as well.

The US needs Germany to beat Portugal in that first game. If they tie, we're in trouble out of the gate ... even with a win vs Ghana. Obviously it wouldn't be the end of it, but I fear GER and POR will be playing defensive/shell soccer in game 1.

Agreed we are rebuilding. I will be happy with a one win too ... I do think we can sneak in to the field of 16 with some luck.

I agree with everything but the bold.

If a tie between Germany/Portugal happens... we must win against Ghana. And our win puts pressure on Portugal and Ghana.

I see Germany coasting and relaxing against us if they are a lock for the top spot out of the group. Which means we could steal a point.

I'd much rather be in Mexico's spot with Brazil where you have to worry about finishing ahead of Croatia and Cameroon than in our current group.

This. Side note.... If Brazil doesn't win this World Cup ... I worry about the safety of other games and teams.

Anyone else see "Klansman" every time you read his name? Just me?

He's just lowering expectations because this WC has the potential to be pretty terrible for the US. College football fans should be pretty used to this.

So a sport where you give up before you even begin? Can you imagine how our fan base would react if Rhoads came out right now and flat out said we weren't going to win the Big XII? Accurate or not, it would pi$$ everyone off, that's for sure.
