UPS man...

So I'm sitting at home, I hear a truck outside my house, and a few moments later a box being thrown on my concrete steps and slid towards my door. Not a single knock or attempt to see if anybody is home, even though my interior door was wide open and my car in the driveway.

I just thought it was interesting that no attempt was made to see if anybody was home to accept this.

Its incredibly annoying when they do this.

Have you ever worked for a home delivery company? Those guys don't get paid by the hour, they get paid by how many stops are on their truck. A guy working at a good pace can do 20 stops in an hour. Suppose the guy has 60 more stop on his truck. You don't think he wants to get home? Unless it needs a signature, there's no reason for him to wait.

And this is the customer's concern how?
 
Most I know will place it on your steps and ring your door bell but not wait for the door to be answered. This way they can let you know of the package and still continue on with more stops.
 
what do you want them to do? they cant sit outside your house for 9 hours waiting for someone to come home. they have 200-250 other people who want their packages just as much as you do.

UPS drivers get paid by the hour. After a couple of years they get paid about 28.00 an hour and pay nothing... NOTHING for benefits.

Yes, I worked for UPS as a part-timer. You know, even as a part timer as long as you work at LEAST 4 hours a month you qualify for full time benefits, which are EXCELLENT!

He explained it. No signature required means no signature required. They always just leave it at the door, in my experience. That is the way they do it at my residence, UPS, Fedex, etc. I actually prefer this, especially if I am working on another project and don't want to be bothered by a silly signature.

It isn't, but I don't blame the guy for not sticking around to wait for someone to come to the door. Suppose the driver does that every stop throughout the day, and waits 1 minute at each stop, and has 150 stops (not packages) on his truck?

The drivers responsibility is to make sure you get your stuff - not to make sure that you're home to personally accept it.

A friend of mine works for FedEx Home Delivery, and those guys get paid 120 a day, and 1 dollar for every package over 100. Over the holidays, they make pretty good money.

They have an IE incentive that helps as well, plus that board kind of serves as a record of whether they're moving out there.

It's a nice part of their contract that works for both parties. If their route is rated for 11.5 hours by the IE people, and they get done in less, they are paid for 11.5 hours regardless. It's a nice incentive.

It's different for businesses, fwiw.
 
I guess I can see both sides, I just always think from a customer service perspective and face to face is the best customer service. I also see that timeliness is a major part of it also. I just thought since I was home, door open, and not a doorbell or knock was kind of weird.

Agreed. They aren't on post office cruise control like my mailman who wears Hawaiian shirts and a visor. Granted he's cool and nice but I think he's got a little too much Jimmy Buffet in him.
