UI AAUP Sanctions

A recommendation passed last month by that AAUP governance committee clarified that the sanction is "primarily directed against the Iowa Board of Regents." But the association's policies only allow for the sanctioning of institutions, not regent systems.

To me, on the surface that organization represents one major problem with our higher education system. A bunch of tenured old croonies trying to protect their overpaid status. Every school has plenty of professors that are getting paid $250K+ and adding very little to the university.

Yah. I'm going to have to side on the UofI and BOR on this one. It is the right of the university and BOR to hire who they want. The fact that they decided to go outside academia might ruffle some feathers, but maybe that was the point. Too many professors and lifelong academics have no experience doing anything else. Maybe the person leading a school well known for their business school should have some experience running a business.

It might not be a bad thing to have the AAUP mad at you, do what we want or we'll sanction you, sounds kind of whiny to me.

Yes, this means the sanction is bad news for not only Iowa but also Iowa State and UNI. You can complain about the AAUP all you want, but the fact is that many faculty will be aware of this when looking for a new job and it could influence their decision to come to an Iowa institution. So the public schools in Iowa under the BOR's control might end up attracting lower-quality faculty members.

LOL.

Next thing you know Iowa will be getting kicked from AAU.

Iowa getting the boot from AAU would confirm ISU as being the Flagship overnight. Iowa wouldn't be able to buy enough commuter college campuses to save them from that.

To me this is more of an indictment of the AAUP. You didn't hire one of our cronies so we will sanction you.
I don't get this thought. They're upset that the person hired has the least experience of all candidates to run an institution. It would be like hiring a team owner that played football in high school to be the head coach of a DI football program.

AAUP /= AAU. Essentially this is a teacher's union getting pissy but with less actual power to do anything. The types of professors that would base a decision on the AAUP are the same that coast once they achieve tenure. Not sure that this is really all that bad.

It would be more like hiring an NFL head coach that never played professional football. You know, something that's done all the time.

The most egregious thing they did is essentially hire the guy and then pretend they were going through an open hiring process. I can see how this might discourage candidates if they think it is already in the bag for someone else. Still surprised Mary Ferentz didn't just get the job.

Except this guy has not been an administrator before, has no educational background that I"m aware of, so no, that isn't a comparable thing.

They needed someone to clean house after the last President botched things up so much. They very intentionally went from outside academia. Academia is too inbred. I guess we don't like diversity in this case. :spinny:

agreed.

So funny to watch the academia and entitled students down there melt down for months now, as a free market capitalist threatens their entitled way of life

Yeah the biggest thing isn't who they hired but that the process was set up from the beginning to hire the guy. It was basically a sham of a hiring process. Oh yeah, and the guy doesn't have some overly impressive business resume. He also lied on his resume.
