Tulane / Houston Trick Play

Tied game, Tulane lines up in victory formation presumably to go to OT. They run a trick play to setup a game winning pass in regulation. Legit or Busch league?

Personally, I'm not a fan. In the victory formation, the defenders are told to ease up and Tulane takes advantage. If the Houston Dline goes and blows up the Oline, everyone would have been up in arms. This can't be OK, right?

Who tells defenders to ease up? Do the officials have the right to do so? The center and QB could always have a mishap. Always have to assume they will.

Well if it was the PAC 12 commissioners office then certainly they could call down and order that.

I have zero issue with this. It was a tie game and a trick play. It could have just as easily gotten stopped for minimal gain if the defenders reacted quicker.

I think a precedent was set, though. Tulane's offensive line better be prepared to get blown up with every kneel down. Other teams will remember this play and make it a point to not make the same mistake that Houston did, even if the game scenario isn't remotely the same.

Sorta. I'm just guessing they won't get the benefit of the doubt when they decide to kneel down on their own 20 before halftime to run those last 8 seconds off the clock. The other team is going to come in hot.

Again, I have no issue with it, but someone is bound to take offense to it and make sure "they don't pull that **** on us." It's just how sports go.

So they won’t get the benefit of the doubt and the defense will actually play defense?

This isn’t contentious. The defense got caught napping.

I have no idea where this is coming from. I have repeatedly said I didn't have an issue with what Tulane did.

I'm saying that in traditional kneel-down scenarios (my example of being at their own 20 with 8 seconds left to go before halftime) Tulane is probably more likely to have the other team come in hard versus the traditional stand-up and walk to the locker room that we're accustomed to seeing.

If you think that the defense plays exactly the same in those scenarios that they do the rest of the game, then we'll just agree to disagree and move on.

The entire point of this play is to catch the defense off guard - it did what it was supposed to do.

The entire point of the ISU pass-pass against Iowa was to catch the defense off guard - it did what it was supposed to do.
