Trip to Italy

I need to see Rome before I cash in my chips. The history has to be pretty amazing if not a bit commercialized at this point.
Had the crazy opportunity to be in Rome the day a new pope was installed. Watched the ceremony sitting inside the Colosseum where they had giant projector screens set up. Then proceeded to walk through the Forum for a couple of hours. Visiting was truly a life-changing experience for me and while I still haven't been back (17 years now), it won't be too much longer. The history is pretty much unparalleled.

My wife and I will be flying into Zurich and traveling with the parents of our exchange student from Germany the 2nd week of May. We will be there for 2 weeks and making our way from Zurich to the Amalfi Coast and back to Zurich. This is our first time to Italy so I will post an update after our travels. Lots of good information in this thread and I am looking forward to our trip!
Zurich is a really cool city too. I'm a big fan of Switzerland in general, if I were to pick up and move to Europe that would be pretty high on my list.

Stay on Murano - the “glass island”. We also went in September when at night it is so quiet and peaceful because most people just take a day trip there from Venice. The Italian blown glass comes from that island. There’s also a lace island.

Did 4 months in Italy for work. I would say my favorite trip was a day in sorrento and hiring a captain to sail around Island of Capri.

I'd highly recommend using guides to see the major sites, Vatican, Coliseum, Pompeii, etc. Even if you have to cut costs elsewhere. If you do try to book one keep in mind most are only licensed for a particular venue. PM me if you want a name of someone who can help arrange them.

It is.......The atmosphere is amazing. Even if you don't want to pay to enter the touristy side, walking around Rome is amazing.

Even if you're not religious, the churches can be amazing. For example, one of them has a Meridian Line that was completed in 1702. Really cool

We took a very similar trip about 10 years ago. Stayed in Rome for 3 or 4 nights, then Florence for 2 nights, and Manarola (Cinque Terre) I believe for 2 nights. It was a bit of a whirlwind, but we had time to see all of the main attractions in each place. That included a "Tour of Tuscany" guided tour. We traveled by train a lot, and that was very convenient/efficient. In fact, the last stop on the Tour of Tuscany was Pisa, and we took a train from there to Manarola instead of returning to Florence on the bus with the rest of the tour. Great, great trip. One thing I would point out is that they have transportation strikes fairly frequently in Italy. I can't recall the exact details, but I do remember them striking while we were in the Cinque Terre, and we started exploring how we were going to make it to Civitavecchia. It ended up being that they kept major lines open, so we caught the train we originally expected to. Just want to throw that out there in case you run into a similar scare.

Also, highly recommend using Rick Steves' self-guided audio tours. They were absolutely fantastic when we were walking around Rome (as well as Florence). I believe we also used them in Athens...and possibly Ephesus and Siena (Siena was part of that Tour of Tuscany).

OK, that is awesome. Sorrento is a cool city and if I remember right, close enough for a day trip to Pompei. The views on that Med coast are amazing.

You know, there are two kinds of people in the world. Italians, and those that wish they were.

I keep seeing that thread title and thinking it's about the WBB teams upcoming summer tour to play a few games in Italy.
