Depends on the type of TP. If it's a nice 2-ply and soft with some of those little cushions then folding is the way to go. If it's the 1-ply, thin, smooth crap found in public toilets, crumpling is a must.
Crumple. Keep your fingers as far away from the action as possible.
I've been taking the whole TP roll and whipping. After the wipe I take off the dirty paper and repeat.
Crumpling seems wasteful and sounds a bit rough to me. Folding all the way.
