I was going to post a comment in the Recruits/Transfers thread about Casey bumping up in future years. However, I decided instead to start a thread and congratulate Casey. I didn't predict him to qualify for the NCAA's and he's proven me wrong. I'm so happy to be proven wrong.

I still don't have him picked as a NCAA AA but I really hope he proves me wrong again. IF he win's a match or two he will exceeded my expectations after the roller coaster ride of a season that he's had. HOWEVER, IF he does AA this year it will complete one of the most amazing in-season turn-arounds I've ever seen. It reminds me of Mark Branch's freshman year...

Casey - If you read this go research Mark Branch's Freshman year. What a legendary season and career.

I know he lost the 3rd/4th match at big 12s, but I hope him getting out from bottom in SV gives him the confidence to choose down during matches at NCAAs. That is going to be a major difference maker in his success next week. I am so excited to see what he can do. The talent is absolutely there.

I agree here, but I really struggled with the decision to put him down in that 2nd OT. Getting out in 6 seconds is a really high bar for anyone let alone given Casey's struggles underneath this year. To his credit, he almost did it.

I don’t think Casey or the coaches knew that rule changed. They looked like they expected another OT period in neutral

I would be very surprised (& concerned) if that was the case. Though David thought he had a stall to give also, and the coaches either thought the same or weren't reminding him, so...

David didn’t see the first stall, KD and Metcalf were trying to tell him but he was busy trying to avoid O’Toole/was too loud for the coaches to shout it at him across the mat. That was a very different situation

Huh. I didn't know it had changed, but the coaches probably should have and every wrestler should probably be told/trained about it. I don't really think it's concerning but it did remind me of something similar happening a year or so ago as well. Gremmel got two technicals(not what they're called. Can't remember the term) and was disqualified. Wasn't his fault the other guy wasn't wrestling, but Gremmel ended up pushing his opponent hard fully off the mat twice and that was that. Dresser said he didn't know it was a disqualification by rule. Not a huge deal but not great.

Who knows... maybe that decision to put him down (and the escape that followed) results in his confidence building and getting his AA so he can prove me wrong again.

The disqualification thing rarely happens. Matches going into 2OT happens every day. There is no way the coaches didn't know the rule. Maybe since Casey already had a qualifying spot wrapped up they wanted to 'test' him in his worst position and he almost came through? That's the only explanation I can think of.

When I wrestled in high school. I never heard anything unless it was between whistles. During live action I could never hear the coaches and usually not the refs. Not sure how common that is but at least a couple other wrestlers have told me the same.

So in the new :30 ride outs...can the first guy choose neutral?
First guy can choose neutral, bottom, or defer. You’re seeing more guys defer so they know how quickly they need to get out, or if they ride out the guy they can go neutral and run for 30 seconds (like Elam did against Sloan in that pitiful 197 pound championship match at big 12s). They might also go neutral if they don’t ride very long and think they have a better chance at getting a takedown (what I think Casey should’ve done)

Can confirm you get this sort of tunnel vision-like focus and rarely hear anything else.

Hopefully he gets his confidence back. He has shown he can complete with the top guys in the weight. He probably should have won against Woods.
