Tiger Woods OUT for the Masters

Ratings will definitely take a hit. It is the Masters but without Tiger there will be many that will not tune in. It is my favorite tournament of the year so I will be watching, does not matter who is in the field.

It's painful to watch Tiger go through this physical struggle. Like him or not off the course, to see a guy not be able to swing a club is just too bad. I hope he's not done being Tiger Woods as we knew him, I think it's good for the sport.

Too bad. Now we won't get to watch him drop to his knees and wince on his bad shots. Funny how his good shots never bother him.....

CBS probably will show a replay of one of his wins along with highlights of this years masters

That really sucks; I wish him a complete recovery.

He's only - what, like 38? Ernie and Phil both won majors in their early 40's, so conceivably Tiger has ~6years x 4majors = 24 chances to catch Jack. But these injuries gotta take their toll.

You think maybe the pain helps cause the bad shots? I bet you also thought he was faking his knee injury when he wont he U.S. Open only to find out he had torn the ligaments.

Tiger's body and mind have taking a beating over the years. He doesn't have the same physical and mental edge he once had. The Rory's and Spieth's of the worlds are in better physical conditions than he is (mostly because they are 15 years younger). Plus those kids are not scared of him, like players were 10 years ago.

I would guess Tiger has 1 more major in him......he will win Augusta one more time, probably around 40. As much I am not a fan of him, he has made golf relevant to the average sports fan. Its sad to see an athlete fall apart the way he has, but I am glad he won't pass Jack.

Just sayin...funny how he only seemed to show pain on the bad shots. Maybe he was playin' it up a bit? Nah, couldn't be, Tiger is perfect. But that's a great comment about the US Open....except I didn't say anything about the US Open. So, I guess, never mind, it wasn't a great comment.

Man you've really got it out for Tiger. I don't understand.

Too much off screen shenanigans with the local gals ruined his swing. His body is worn out. Ever since the golf club to the back of the SUV, it has been a struggle.

Jack had hip replacements.

I think this is one of the largest factors in his dominance not being what it once was. In the late 90s other golfers just knew that they weren't good enough to beat Tiger. He has a huge advantage every tournament before he ever took his first swing.

I think Tigers own "Tiger effect" is mostly to blame. Amateur golfers back during Tigers prime prolly grew up wanting yo be the guy who was finally better than the might Tiger Woods.

Tiger's decline started with replacing his swing coach. Ever since he went to the "new" swing, he's never dominated and always seems to be playing conservative as if he's already the front runner. It's not a coincidence Tiger's old coach is Phil's new coach - and now it's Phil winning the majors.

Maybe a bit. I just don't understand all the crazy weird idol worship for him. Yes, he was likely on his way to being the all time greatest golfer. He certainly had the most dominant stretch of golf. But the people just straight pure idol worship him and get all KU jayhawk basketball fan crazy on you if you don't also. It's bizarre. I never watched golf because of him.

I don't like Tiger the person, but I admit, Tiger the golfer makes me want to watch more. I'll still watch as it's the Masters.

A couple thoughts on this:

1) Golf is taking a big hit from Tiger's struggles, and this Masters will be further evidence of it. For a long stretch there Tiger was the only storyline in a sport that needs storylines. What will compel people to watch anything but Sunday afternoon now? Sitting on the edge of your seat to see if Adam Scott repeats? Seeing if Rory Mclroy inexplicably plays like **** and misses the cut like he often does? Watching Phil and Bubba play from the trees all week?

2) I wonder if some of these younger guys will take Tiger as a bit of a cautionary tale and streamlines their swings a bit. A big part of Tiger's success came from bombing the ball and making Par 5's into essentailly Par 4s, but that ability came from a very aggressive swing. It really is no wonder that his knees and back have gone out on him given the torque generated from his swing. It makes you wonder if some of these younger long-hitters will change their swing a bit to decrease the stress it's putting on their bodies.

To your 2nd point. I almost think they'll have to. But not many casual golf fans want to watch someone take a 4 iron off a 550 yard par 5 every time either. So, hopefully we will see the advancement in technology keep evolving so the game can keep being played long and aggressive but keep the players healthier longer.
