Breaks a nearly 40 year old record.

All-Time: ! 8:52.00 1975 Jim Eicken, Davenport Central

I'm guessing he will have his choice of where he wants to run in college. Any word if he will go to Iowa State or is he looking to go elsewhere?

Word from the blue oval is around halfway through the race when it looked like he could set record the atmosphere around the track was electric. Just barely beat a kid from Boone

And he's a junior. Props to the kid from Boone who was in it with him pushing each other. He'll be left out of the convo for being second but he was under the record too.

And the kid in 4A from Linn Mar ran 9 flat without any competition.

Atmosphere was unreal. Just got home.

Pollard had the race in hand for most of it, and the kid from Boone (not Meier) really picked it up that last lap.

2nd fastest high school 3200 this year nationwide.

I feel much worse about my HS exploits... I was a 3A qualifier and finished in the middle of the pack, but would've gotten lapped today.

That's a ridiculous time, congrats TP!

I just cannot comprehend people that can run that fast for 2 miles. It amazes me.

Congrats to Thomas! He has his parents' genes, that's for sure.

The race at Drake was better, overall, IMO. Pollard dominated most of this race and the atmosphere was still fantastic while that was going on, but the entire second half of the Drake race was a free for all between the top four guys. This one didn't get interesting in terms of a battle for first until the final lap, which was the best lap of a 2-mile I've ever seen. Austin really kicked it into gear when he got to the bell, and he also broke the previous record. Meier damn near got under the 9-minute mark, as well.

Distance running in the state is at its absolute peak right now. We'll never see a group like this come through at the same time again. Austin, Meier, Pollard, Melchert, Evans on the boys side and Jenks and Topham for the girls. It's mind-blowing just how many truly elite distance runners there are in the state right now.

That last 200 meters had me sweating thinking it was going to be the cross country state championship race all over again... good for Pollard.. I wouldn't be surprised if Thomas ended up at Oregon

So proud of the Gilbert sweep of the girls and boys' races at that distance. As a parent, this picture is awesome. You can tell how proud James is of his big brother. James may never run like Thomas, but he is a winner in his own right. Great family.

Watching that video, if I hadn't known he was running the 3,200, I would have thought with the pace he was running at that he was running the 800. Unreal effort

Looks so much like his dad, who must be pretty darn proud today.

JP is pretty pumped. See the video at 10:00. Reminded me of him during the Cyclone Tailgate Tour Party Bus games.
