Monticello, IA
In Monticello Ia. Its at great pastimes if you know anyone in the area to get it for you. They had it reserved for someone but they didn't pick it up. Don't bother calling and reserving it they won't do that anymore. Ready, Set, GO

UPDATE: Those bottles are gone but there are still some in the Fareway store in Monticello. I really don't get the big deal about this stuff either. It's not bad by any means and I would probably enjoy it more if I could get it more than once every 6 months. Just so some people know it sounds like the state gave out too much this past week so we probably won't be seeing much more of this stuff in the near future.

Picked up a bottle at Forbes in Spirit Lake this morning... Didnt ask how many were left.... But my Aunt said she saw some there on friday... I didnt think there would be any left but there was.... Also the guy was telling me that someone from the Twin Cities called and asked if he would hold 5 bottles for him and he would be right down... The guy told him no way... your not a re0gular.... NICE!!!!

The mystique of being able to find a bottle is part of its popularity. Im not a fan personally but its more about not liking whiskey than TR. I honestly don't know anyone who is a fan of that kind of liquor that doesn't think TR is top notch.

This.

So far, none of the naysayers have provided anything of value to explain their distain or dislike for TR. Given that, it is hard not to think it is coming from the Fuzzy Navel crowd. You bring up a great point. If you don't appreciate whiskey in general, you're probably not going to appreciate how good TR actuall is.

I like TR, but some of the luster was polished off when I learned it was actully made in Indiana and just bottled in Templeton. The taste did not change for me, just the finish. I liked it better before I knew the truth. I felt like I did when I learned that the great chilli that we got at school (no bean chilli) actually had the beans pureed into the chilli by the cooks. Was still really good, just not what I wanted it to be.

it's a marketing thing. marketing makes guys drink putrid swill - see Bud Light.

I also think you should lose the privilege to your awesome avatar for such an absurd statement.

As for whats the big deal, its a absolutely delicious rye whiskey made right here in Iowa. Its a small batch whisky so every liqour store only gets a rationed amount per month, which sells out extremely fast. At Randalls in Fairview Heights, IL they sold 180 bottles in 29 minutes last Friday.

It has also been very well appreciated by experts:
"In June 2008, Templeton Rye was named Best Overall Whiskey out of more than 4,000 entries at the Los Angeles Wine and Spirits Competition and won a gold medal in March at the San Francisco World Spirits Tasting. It was also named the best whiskey under 10 years old by Whiskey Bible."

I'm a whiskey fan but have never had Templeton Rye. All the love on here has made me curious. Any idea where to watch for bottles in the Cedar Rapids area?

Kilgore Trout's statement seems completely true to me. Based on the Bavarian Purity Law (the Reinheitsgebot) used for brewing the first beer, Budweiser can't even be called "beer."

Budweiser is to beer what the Big Mac is to meat: both are #1, but it sure isn't because of flavor.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled thread...

what is the big deal about this stuff?

It's good. However, there is no need to chase it around. It's not that good. There are enough quality liquers, Whiskeys, and other stuff that will get you drunk. I think someone said it best that people just like to chase around and try to find it and make a big deal out of it. It is good stuff though.

I don't understand the facination with templeton. There is much more other choices of alcohol i would rather drink. But I am biased as I don't care for whiskey/bourbon all that much.
