After 16 long months of battling cancer, my sister's body is finally succumbing to this dreadful disease. In a touching gesture, a friend of hers contacted the Iowa State Department of Athletics to notify them that a long-time, devoted fan was dying.

Yesterday, Coach Prohm, Monte Morris, Abdel Nader, Jameel McKay, Matt Thomas, and Georges Niang called my sister (via FaceTime). They wished her well, thanked her for being a fan, and also talked with her two children and my mother.

These six gentlemen exhibited, I thought, true class. Even my other sister (who is a devout Hawkeye fan) commented as to how impressed she was with their message.

So, thank you coach, players, and especially Julie Voss for making this happen. It was truly a bright spot in a sad time for my family.

That is what life is all about and puts everything in perspective. Thank you for sharing.

So sorry about your sister, but thanks for posting. Very cool of the team.

I have been through what you are going through, and my thoughts and prayers go to you and your family, and especially to your sister. But to learn that young men use their celebrity in this manner shows the true measure of a man, and in this case, man. Thank you for sharing, and God bless.

This is a sad reminder to keep all games in proper perspective, they are JUST games. Not life or death.

Last year the players all signed a basketball for a 19 year old girl in my hometown who was battling cancer. She unfortunately didn't make it but she was given the basketball before she passed and loved it. Sometimes what defines a student athlete isn't just what they in the classroom or on the floor.

As much as we trash this team for this or that, this shows what kind of awesome guys we have representing our school and at the end of the day that matters. Thanks for sharing this.

Can't believe Prohm wouldn't let Carter and Cooke get on the line - even for a minute or two. How are they going to be ready if we need them on a call like this come March?Seriously, that is a great gesture by that whole group. Hopefully it made a your sister and your family forget about a terrible situation for a few minutes. Having been through that, I found even a small distraction and temporary joy makes a difference.

Way more important than winning and losing basketball games. Thanks for sharing and your family is in Cyclone Nation's thoughts and prayers

So sorry for your loss. Perhaps your sister will watch over this team, I do believe in angels and I'm sure your sister has her wings. Wish you much peace.

They do that kind of thing all the time- I know of two situations personally where ISU players and staff signed stuff for benefit auctions, etc. One of those unsung things that they do that really deserves high praise.

Thank you for sharing this, and my deepest condolences to you and your family. Stories like this help us remember that while basketball is just a game, the players and coaches can transcend the sport and touch people's lives in many ways. I'm proud to support this program, this coach, and these players who display such class and character.

Really sorry to hear about your sister.

Really proud of our guys and the character they have and what they do to give back to the fans where they do. Really for all the bashing they get on here it goes to show that these really are upstanding individuals that are representing themselves and the university in a very positive light.

Between them doing this and the local Hy-Vee's doing what they did for Monte and everyone in Flint, it just goes to show that it really is a family and the community really pulls together when it matters which can have a huge impact on many lives. Thanks for sharing.
