Thank You Coach Paul Rhoads

The day you were announced as the head coach of Iowa State University I knew very little about you. Today as I digest the news of your departure, I feel very blessed and honored to have had the opportunity to get to know you as a coach and a man.

Honored that you were the captain that lead our teams and our fan base to some of the most epic times in ISU football history. Things that no person or event can take away from you, your players and this fan base. We all owe you a huge thank you for that.

You are a man that doesn't require "flash" to sparkle. You are loyal, honest, hard working, sincere, a tremendous leader, mentor and to many a father figure. You ran the program with dignity, recruited tremendous young men, not just "football players" and you taught those young men more than just the "X&O's" of football.

Thank you for representing yourself and the university with class. Thank you for wearing your heart on your sleeve. Thank you for your selflessness. Thank you for just being you.

I truly wish things would have worked out differently for everyone, because there is not a person more deserving of success. I for one respected you as our coach, but I respect you even more for the man that you are. Best wishes coach. You are a cyclone forever in our hearts.

Really like the man, but it was time to move on. Wish nothing but the best for his future coaching destination.
 
If you had asked me three years ago, I would never have expected Paul and Fred to be gone.
 
Easy to jump on the bandwagon when times are bad. I respect CPR for that Oklahoma State win, a number of wins over Iowa, bowl win, and 2 victories over Texas. Thanks, CPR, for being a Cyclone.

Great man, yes. But the only thing he really did as a coach was beat Oklahoma State and Iowa a few times. We were gifted the So Proud speech game. And we won the bowl his first year with Chizik's guys.

I like Paul and I think he would make a great d-coordinator somewhere.

Very well put and timely. I might add that he also led us to 3 bowl wins, the biggest win in Iowa State history and consequent my greatest one-game thrill in ISU history. His enthusiasm was contagious and consequently we now have the most season ticket holders ever, the highest attendance count ever and was the leading influence behind stadium expansion, creating world class workout facilities as well as many other stadium enhancements. And, most important of all it appears that you've fostered love and respect from your players for what you've done for them and taught them about life.
 
I had high hopes for Paul when he was hired. I wish things would have turned out differently as I'm sure he does a well. I appreciated that he wanted to be here. That being said it was time for change. Paul leaves us with guys who can play at this level.Good luck Coach. Go Clones

And he graduated his players and had no scandals (no stinking rhabdo crap at ISU)

He rode his Harley but without the pretty young slut on the back.

I'll buy this. It didn't work out, and Pollard has made the right call, IMO. But I sure wish it would have worked. I don't feel anger or hubris toward CPR today, I feel more sad than anything else.

Because it's hard to compare schedules prior to CPR tenure with the way our conference has changed over time, one objective thing that I would add to his accomplishments would be this: From 1980-2008 (28 years prior CPR) ISU beat 8 ranked teams. In CPR's 7 years at ISU, he beat 4 ranked teams (non with the name of Iowa on their jersey). So in 1/4 of the time, he had half of the total wins over ranked teams in the previous 28 years.

He beat like 3 or 4 other ranked teams on the road. He beat Texas twice. He beat Nebraska. He did things no other coach had really done here. Don't act like OSU was his only good win. Still time for a change though. Can we all agree the next coach doesn't get credit for any wins the first 4 years though since they will be Rhoads' recruits?

Thanks Jim...I mean Paul. Don't let the door hit ya on your Iowa Nice Guy rear end on the way to Ankeny with your $20 million plus in the bank account. Hopefully our next coach has a degree in drama so that he can give emphatic post game speeches to the underwater basket weavers of the world.

I was hoping he would have been given a position in the athletic department. Guy loves Iowa State.
