AOL Instant Messener AIM started 25 years ago today, as one of the precursors of social media.
Did you have an account? Did you use it much? Anything you specifically remember or have fun/unique stories to share?

I had one with a few hundred friends on there. I knew all the people pretty well except for a few randoms. Great to have before text messaging really became a thing.

I loved AIM. Pretty much used it up until Facebook messenger came out. It was a good way with keeping up with friends, especially when we all went to college and got spread across the country.

I did ICQ, AIM, MSN, and Yahoo. Plus other various chat rooms, mainly on AOL but there was other sites. I loved them growing up after I built a computer at 11-12 years old and used them regularly until near the end of high school when they fell out of fashion.

The community of a chat room was awesome, very similar vibe to the Random Thoughts thread but it was “live”

Maybe I’ll find an active chat room again. It’s kinda shifted to Discord but I find Discord so clunky. AOL chat rooms were so clean and easy

Cool Sun-OT. I like pop culture milestones-ish things like this.

I did some connecting using Messenger, sporadically. (Probably more often than it seems in retrospect).

I used GeoCities to build my first websites. It was just something fun to do, but I ended up in a career of a webmaster by definition. GeoCities taught me the basics so long ago.
I think the first site I tried to build on was Angelfire over a dial-up modem. Eventually tried GeoCities when got on the ISU high speed network in college. Took a class at ISU that used Adobe GoLive 5 that I learned how to do a lot more things with. I sadly still use that today to keep the family cattle page updated because I'm too cheap and lacking in time these days to learn how to use something newer to build a site more modern looking.
