Summer Des Moines League WBB

I've heard there is a 4 team league playing in DSM this summer and that many players from next years WBB team are participating. They play on Sunday nights at 4:30 at at 6:00, but I don't know where.

Does anyone out there know anything? Help!!!

I attended the games yesterday. They're played at the Grandview College Gym which is on the east edge of campus just off E.14th St. a few blocks south of Euclid.Their remaining game dates are July 9th, 16th, 23rd

and 30th. They apparently aren't having a play-off like the men.

The four teams are the Monarchs, Sparks, Liberty and Shock. The ISU players on the Monarchs are Shellie

Mosman and Lisa Bildeaux. Nicky Wieben, Anna Florzak and Toccarra Ross are on the Sparks. Lyndsey Medders and Rachel Pierson are on the Liberty. Genesis Lightbourne and Gillian Bjerke are on the Shock.

Yes, there was an article at gocyclones a few weeks ago that listed her as recovered. It even featured a photo of her shooting a free throw next to L. Medders.

I'll be sure and post I how I think she looks after the July 9th summer league game.

IDK but if were building off last years team were gonna have a nother good season which is always great to look forward too.

Player updates from the July 9th games:

Medders - was Medders. Scored at will and was looking to push the ball at all times.

Pierson - You'd never know she had back surgury last January. She was extremely impressive in her ability to finish. If she got the ball anywhere near the paint, you could count the two points.

Florzak - definately had a point guards mentality (she didn't shoot much). She handled the ball real well and looked to be having the most fun when she was guarding Medders coming up the court.

Ross - Wow!!!, she was impressive. I can't even really describe what I liked so much about her other than her workman like efficiency. I had never seen her play before tonight, but I figured as a JUCO transfer she'd sit at the end of the bench. If tonight's play is indicitive, she will be a solid backup to Ronhovde getting real minutes.

Mosman - had some nice plays in jump shots and drives to the basket, but I think she'll need some time to develop. In a couple of seasons she may take over games like Medders does.

Bildeaux - didn't look real good in the first half as she seemed to miss all her elbow jumpers, but got it together in the second half and was able finish her shots on the low block.

Bjerke - she was mixing it up a lot with Jill Martin (Drake) who was the toughest player to guard in the second game.

Anderson (2007 Recruit from DMACC) - she is 6'5" for sure and skinny as a beanpole, but played more physical than looked possible.

Ligthtbourne - maybe the most athletic player ISU has ever had, I read somewhere once where she said she has dunked before, and I believe it. She also will need some time to develop. She seemed to like the hook shot, but I only saw her make them in the warmups.

Will Pierson be able to catch the ball on a break and finish like Welle used to? I miss that.

It's been four years since I've seen Welle play and I've only seen Pierson play 2 exhibition games and a summer game, so I don't want to oversell this, but yes, she can run the floor and finish like Welle.

The thing that always stuck out in my mind about Welle was she would always get good position on the block, would make a textbook perfect move and finish the basket while maybe even getting fouled in the process.

Pierson doesn't seem to be quite as techincally perfect in her moves, but she is a lot quicker than I ever remember Welle being (imagine K. Robinette quickness) and she can finish. While she has been matched up against lesser talent in the games I've seen; she went around those players like they were pylons.

The thing to remember about the Welle years was that those teams were filled with other great players... but were those other players that much greater because our opponents had to respect Welle???? Next year's team has me really, really, excited because I think they are going to present that same dilemma. If the opponent just focuses it's defense on stopping Medders and the three point shot, they may find themselves in some deep weeds. It's all going to add up to some high scoring games.
