Sub 2 Hour Marathon

An incredible athletic accomplishment. Breaking the 2 hour mark was once thought to be impossible, much like before Roger Bannister broke the 4 min mile mark in 1957. Unfortunately won't count as an official world record because it wasn't at an open event, but this shows that it's possible and eventually somebody is going to get there.

That’s just insane.

I don't think a lot of people understand just how insane it really is.

He averaged 13.1 mph for 26.2 miles. My treadmill in my basement doesn't even go that fast. I turned mine up to 11 mph once and my legs could barely even keep up underneath me.

It's just not even fathomable to me how a human being could do this?

I would say most people can't even begin to comprehend how fast elite marathoners are. This will be the most amazing athletic feat we see this year and this thread will be lucky to get to a second page. They're criminally underappreciated as athletes.

This is an amazing physical feat, no matter the environment it was performed in.

So this guy also has the record in open competition as well? The phrasing in the article confused me.

He is the current record holder from the Berlin Marathon 2018.
1) Kipchoge 2:01:39, Berlin 2018
2) Bekele 2:01:41, Berlin 2019

Genetic freaks of nature. Training and science will get you some advantage, but some people are just crazy outliers.

Even when I was running a lot I don't know if I could have held that marathon pace for a single 400m or a single 100m sprint. Think about a car driving through a parking lot at 15mph and that's how fast this guy was running.

I can't imagine this. I can't imagine running 1 x 4:34 mile. I have shin splints just reading these comments.

Kudo's to him!

And in his honor, I am going to drink 26 ounces of beer, probably in a lot less than 2 hours.

I will average 2-3 beers/hour for the next three hours, maybe more depending on ISU's competency.

I once ran a self-timed 12ish miles in about 90 minutes which was an achieved goal.

Feels like dunking on a kid's hoop now.

Crazy work by that dude.
