I see that Culpepper is trying to get the Lions interested in signing him. That made me think about players who were at the top of their game who, without a major injury, fell to the scrap heap after a year or two.

Here's a couple on my list:

NFL: Daunte Culpepper
MLB: Chuck Knoblauch

Culpepper blew 3 ligaments in his right knee. Without his ability to run his weakness at reading defenses was exposed and the results are fairly plain to see.

I'd consider the injury sustained by Culpepper to be one that could effect him for the rest of his career. That was nasty.

Ankiel has kind of gone from stud to dud to stud again.

Didn't Culpepper hut his knee, or both knees?

I'm going to defend Culpepper a little bit here - keep in mind he's been in this league for 10 years and during that time has put up some semi-impressive numbers (of course, he had Moss to throw to for a few of those years). Not every QB is going to be half as durable as Farve or Montana, hell, most aren't, especially considering the first half of his career was spent on the artificial turf in Minnesota. Is he a Hall of Famer? Maybe, maybe not - probably will depend who all's on the ballots with him at the time. But it's not as if he hasn't have a decent career, and it's not as if he hasn't surpassed a league average for years as a starting QB in this league...

Unless he reinvents himself today, there is NO way he is in the HOF. (This coming from a Vikings fan!)

He had a couple of great years but I would hope it takes more than that to get in the HOF.

Yeah, he was hurt in Minnesota. But he was completely healthy in Oakland with a chance to be a star but couldn't keep his starting job.

How can you call a guy that blew out nearly everything possible in his knee..."completely healthy"?

I'm no fan of Culpepper and kind of think the guy is soft, but he did have what for most is a career-ending injury.

Stephon Marbury. He got paid and pretty much stopped laying and caring.

Also, Barry Zito and Giambi. Both also tanked after getting big paydays, but Giambis also had something to do with getting off the juice. Maybe the same for Zito?!? I can almost throw faster than he can now.

Ken Griffey Jr.

He was the best in the game, considered one of the best ever.

Definitely not a dud, but never was the same after getting hurt repeatedly.

With Sosa, I agree you can't call someone who hit 600+ HR a dud. He was a free swinger and got old.... Dude swung at everything. He just got to a point where he couldn't connect anymore.

Zito is a dud because he's 30. He should be throwing harder than 85mph.

Another dud I can think of in addition to those thrown out there was Brady Anderson. He hit 50 of his 210 career HR in one season. I remember playing fantasy baseball the next year, and he went off the boards SO fast... Ended up only hitting 18 the next year. SO funny!

Ricky Williams is a good one. Sounds like he is working his way back this year. He was the star of their summer camps.

Hey, he was injured too with the Marywanna Malaise.

Ryan Leaf was stud in college as number one and dud in pro training camp. His feeling were hurt too when bad things weere said about his field performance - like the 5 interception ensemble in one game.
