STORY: One game — in 1998 — pushed Cy-Hawk series onto a consistently competitive path

As an ISU sophomore who grew up an Iowa fan this is the exact moment I became a Cyclone football fan for life. I loved going to Hilton right away win or lose but the fb team was such a struggle the prior year I was only casually a fan until this game, it flipped a switch. I know it was the same way for a lot of "previously Iowa fan" students on campus and I think that phenomenon mostly disappeared starting that day.

Something imo that's pretty stupid is that during 'the streak', Iowa was legit Top 10-15 good for a handful of seasons and the rest fairly marginal. And ISU was certainly not good but hung around quite a few years.

As much as McCarney needed that game, Hayden needed it to keep up the image/legacy.

A win here or there would have at least maybe quieted Hok fans down a little.

I was at this game and this was the only Cy Hawk game I attended. We were outside Kinnick where the ISU team bus just arrived and was unloading. As they were getting off of the bus, my dad commented how serious and focused they looked and thought the game would be very close.
