Still in St. Louis -- good Pinkel/MO article

More interesting reading from the St. Louis Post Dispatch in an article on Gary Pinkel's tenure at Missouri. Note how he credits the 'turning point' in his program to that game with us back in '04 when we had a great game plan going against Brad Smith, ended up knocking him out, then in comes this FRESHMAN, and we had no answer for Daniel. You could also point to that game/moment as one of McCarney's 'turning points' in his program, as well as others.


It takes everybody, not just Gary Pinkel
 
That was a big game for Pinkel, he was all but fired before a couple of nice bowl wins. I lived in MO at the time and Mizzou fans were wanting him out for a few years before the sucessful years with Daniel.
 
I use to hate Gary Pinkel especially for his reaction to the loss in 2006, but in the last couple years I've come to respect him more.
 
Thinking of that 2004 Mizzou game makes me want to puke. We knock Brad Smith out of the game and Daniel comes in and goes John Elway on us. Of course it didn't help that McCarney did his typical strategy with the lead and got ultra conservative and tried to hang on. This game and KU in 2005 were brutal to endure

I think its really strange that we always did a decent job containing smith, while teams like Nebby struggled mightily against him. I think our focus on Smith left us lost and of course you mentioned Dmacs "play not to lose" strategy rather than playing to win. We can talk about this years Nebraska game, the last 2 Kstate games etc but nothing was as gutrenching as the losses to Mizzou and KU in 04/05. I was a season ticket holder at age 6(in the mid 80's) so I've experienced all kinds of tough losses and endured horrible teams as an ISU fan but those 2 years really stick out.

Absolutely! Pinkel is the first "smart" coach in Mizzou history in a loooong time to embrace Missouri talent. Other geniuses that recently coached at Mizzoui (Bob Stull and Woddy Widenhoffer come to mind) thought they could recruit nationally and leave in-state talent out of the equation. They found out that they couldn't! There is plenty of Missouri talent to make Mizzou a perennial top 30 if you do it right. Pinkel knows what he's doing.
 
Not to be "that" guy, but the game Smith got knocked out of was in 2005. It was my first Big 12 road game. We got screwed by the zebras late in that game when Paris stripped a ball from a receiver and took it back for the game winning 6. Apparently it was ruled down by contact, which was just ridiculous. It was a terrible, terrible call, and it allowed Mizzou to keep the ball, and a 7 point deficit (as opposed to a 13 or 14 point one) on what became the game tying drive. Almost makes me sick to think about.

I think this was the most I have ever sworn at my stereo to this day. John Walters was absolutely sick when he was calling this game. It. Sucked. Alot.
 
Word inside the KC Tiger club was that Pinkle was gone if he didnt win that game. Of course the worst thing that could happen to ISU was to have a lead late in the game. Mac would go super conservative, opposing coaches would get aggressive and kick our butt.
 
I was at that 2005 game too and if I remember, ISU started the game with its first two offensive possesions going for 6 points for Mizzou. A pick six and a fumble returned for the touchdown.

After that ISU settled down and scored 24 points. Mizzou fans were leaving the game in the fourth quarter. I agree with the Paris call, I also remember Ryan Koch fumbling that we thought was down by contact that Mizzou got the ball back.
 
I thought pinkel showed class our last game when he could have been a jerk and ran the ball in to jump up 21-0 but decided to neal and rung the clock out. I appreciated that.

Gary Pinkel is the best and smartest coach in the big xii conference....Since Bo (the nose) pelini has moved onto the big 10 conference.....


I noticed that pinkel did NOT want mizzou to join the big 10....after last night I can understand why pinkel would want to stay in the big 12 so he can play KU-KSU & ISU every year.....
