It's with a heavy heart (and a bit late) that I start this thread. With the passing of the great Walter Becker I'm curious what your top 5 Steely Dan list looks like. Here's mine:

5. Dirty Work
4. Any Major Dude
3. My Old School
2. Peg
1. Reelin' In The Years

I'm not a big fan of Steely Dan, but I do like Kid Charlemagne

Taking a Cyclone detour - I always thought a good nickname for Steele Jantz was "Steely Jan":

"There's another 8 yard completion from Steely Jan to Josh 'Hey 19' Lentz"

1. Kid Charlemagne
2. Do it Again (that solo, wow)
3. Any Major Dude
4. My Old School (again for the guitar that duels with the horns)
5. Deacon Blues

I never really liked them until a few years ago but something switched and suddenly I became quite a big fan. Long commute and I've been listening to them a ton.

1. Do It Again (great storyline in the lyrics)
2. FM (reminds me of my stoner days at good ol' ISU)
3. Aja
4. Deacon Blues
5. I.G.Y. (yeah, I know, this was Don Fagen doing solo, but it sure sounds like a Steely Dan song. I heard it first at the Metrodome while the Twins were taking batting practice and always thought it was cool song.)

We were at the Rangers vs Angels game on Sunday and the sound guy played Steely Dan songs over every break. It was a pretty cool tribute even though nobody else there knew who's songs they were or why they were playing.

I was introduced to Steely Dan in high school in the late 1970's when I heard Rikki Don't Lose That Number on the radio and have been fascinated by them ever since.

#5. Rikki
#4. Peg
#3. Do It Again
#2. Deacon Blues
#1. Aja

I think I like the Aja song more each time I hear it. And I consider the Aja album to be the best overall album I've ever heard.

Have you noticed that Hyvee Liquor (at least the one in West Ames) often has Steely Dan music playing? That is either really bad (Steely Dan has become muzak) or really good (they are catering to customers like me).

It does have some sort of unique calming sound...which I think is why I rejected it in my teens and 20s but like it in my 30s. I also fell for the whole "overproduced" line but really I'm not sure there's such a thing if the end result is great which it often was.

This is pretty much mine. Might sub Show Business Kids and Kid Charlemagne for Peg and... well something else...

Also reminded me of the thread last week about misunderstood lyrics. "It's my favorite porno movie." versus "It's my favorite foreign movie."

Lately my No. 1 has been Time out of Mind.

It's perfection and grace

It's the smile on Coach Campbell's face

Agree with MeanDean - the top three definitely. 4 and 5 could be a variety of others. One of my favorite bands in high school and college. Enjoyed quite a bit of the herb listening to SD.
