*****Spring Game Post Game Thoughts*****

I just got home and haven't read any of this or any other threads yet.

As some of you know I come back and work with the LB'ers on occasion.
I was really happy with how they played today. Both Miller and George
looked like they were ready to step up.Both are physically capable...they just need to let their instincts take over and stop thinking before doing.
I love Floyd Mattison, we just gotta add some explosion to him...(first 2-3 steps) and a few pounds wouldnt hurt. That will come with time.More powerlifting instead of bodybuilding should take care of that.
Not gonna comment on the rest of the team,as I have no control over them.

Overall team depth and speed is vastly improved.

Unless Tiller has taken 30 steps forward no matter what ISU has anywhere else, the best ISU can do is 2-10 if he is the starter. Did you see how he folds under pressure with any sort of blitz? UNI made him look like a high school QB, many teams have.
You are so right. A Cyclone team with Jerome Tiller at the helm would never, ever be able to defeat, say, Nebraska in Lincoln.

Imo...Steele looked like he has run this offense since the beginning of spring ball which is exactly how long he's been here. Tiller imo did not look like he's been in this offense for two years and its kind of sad. Jerome should far and away be the offensive leader of this football team but he looks like he barely has a handle on things. Barnett looked real solid and I think he will be a great asset in the future at qb.

Overall impression: it was a spring game. Didn't come with many expectations, didn't leave overly impressed or disappointed.

I thought it was a great spring scrimmage and got to see some of the new guys ! Was suprised at some of the new names being called .... As for quarterbacks Tiller looked like he had better reads to me than rest . Thought Janz had a great throw ,but at times looked like he was making wrong read? Not sure though sometimes that is a reciever too.. I am excited to see them on the field for real game. Seriously think they can win more than two games !! They didnt give away anything today just fun to get to see them on field .Go CYCLONES ! LOVED when they came over to crowd and sang fight song with us !! Very Cool!

How was that followed up? oh yeah, only managed 10 pts against one of the worst defenses ISU has gone up against. How did he do against UNI? How about Mizzou?

He was hurt I believe. I will also bet you $100 that we win more than 2 games. Put your money where your mouth is.

I will, if Tiller is the starting QB for the season ISU will end up 2-10. The wins would probably be against UNI and Kansas.

Under Tiller the offense scored in two plays including a 40yd completion.

I am very worried that a JUCO that isn't an obvious home run like Seneca can come in and pressure the guys that are already here. You can't hide your quarterback at this level so hopefully one of these guys steps up, but I am not liking the vibe I am getting here.

Very excited to have a good defense, I think they can keep us in a lot of games. Lot of good players on this defense. Just a damn shame not to have a good offense to go with it, especially when we have what I think are two really good linemen in Hicks and KO.

And these receivers have got to start catching the ball. Way too many drops yet again. I am really starting to wonder what is going on with this position group. Reynolds made a couple plays and this Horne kid looks good, hopefully they don't regress. Drops really made Tiller look bad against Missouri.

Yeah, 3rd quarter I think. Jerome was sitting on the bench (which no other players were doing) talking to someone with a sidelines pass (wearing a black windbreaker, not a trainer).

The guy he was sitting by was the teams orthpaedic surgeon. Tiller got hit on the elbow and was holding it after almost every throw the rest of the day after he took that hit

How many obvious home-run recruits are there?
If Jantz was not here, you would not be worried? Imo many would think we do not have good QB's, regardless of Jantz coming in and pressuring these guys. The coaches could have secretly put Tom Brady out there and his "pressure" him would still have you worried.

I would be more concerned for the program if the coaches brought in a Juco at that position and they did not pressure the guys already there. I have liked the coaches eye for talent thus far.

Defensively, our linebackers are a bright spot and will show major improvement over last year, because of added depth. I liked what I saw from a blitzing aspect. Even a little zone blitz look with DEs dropping back in coverage a couple times. Nothing to notable from the defensive backs but no glaring mistakes either.

Offensively, I always find it hard to judge the O-line in a scrimmage. If they look good is it because the D-line is bad? That being said the one thing that worried me was the snaps that were all over the place. The QB could never know if he was going to be catching it in front of his face or picking it up off his shoe tops. Running backs didn't make any huge plays, but we are definitely four deep at that position. I liked what the WRs did after the catch, but there were way too many dropped passes today. As for QB, I will be very surprised if Jantz isn't the starter by the time conference play starts. Tiller may be ahead right now, but the fact that Jantz is already so close after only playing in this offense for a couple months makes me think that as he becomes more comfortable he will pass over Tiller on the depth chart.

I wasn't able to make the game today, had a family thing, but I will say that everytime I heard John call Lattimer's name, I got more and more upset.

I really thought that he was suspended "indefinitely," the fact that he did not miss any Spring ball sends a bad message. It also leads to more and more nonsense.

The first play of the scrimmage when darks caught that long pass, the ball was absolutely underthrown. Darks made a great play on the ball. That was not a great pass, albeit it was into the wind. It was underthrown by a while.

The pass to Money? It was underthrown in the sense that he had to slow down, but it is not like he had to come back to the ball. If he leads him it may have been a touchdown.

Tiller out performed Jantz. Period. If we want to say it's because of his experience here, that's fine with me, I agree but the fact is that on this day, Tiller was better than Jantz. I agree on the fact that all of that means very little.

UNI, he was hurt if you would listen and he played well enough to beat Mizzou.

Alright, done and logged. Just curious, how many wins if someone else starts?

3 plays. One of those passes was not a touchdown. He also didn't turn the ball over, which Jantz did.

Does anyone know why the defense had white stripes on their helmets?

Most likely it was so the offense could tell by helmet. That's just a guess but usually that's what something on the helmet will mean. I know, I know, they had a different jersey, but you don't always see jerseys.

It was Money. I will say this and I think it also would have pertained to the lack of downfield throws the past two years. Sometimes guys aren't always open and you throw it to them anyway in hopes they make a play. There are numerous examples of receivers who would simply out jump someone to make a play. A guy that comes to mind is Braylon Edwards. As a QB, you know who those guys are and sometimes you take a chance. I'm not saying that was Tillers intent, in fact I'm sure it wasn't but in that case, Money made a play on the ball. That's his job and Tiller gave him a shot. That's part of playing QB, IMO.

I agree money made a good play but at some point you have to recognize that it wasnt the qbs throw that made the play

Yes, I acknowledged that. My point was that sometime you throw to a guy who isn't open and let him make a play because that's what they do. In this case, it worked out.
