*****Spring Game Post Game Thoughts*****

I though Tiller looked the best of the quarterbacks, seems like he always found the open man.

While none of them were outstanding, I agree that Tiller was far and away the best. It is easy to see why he is #1 and I'll be surprised if he loses it. Jantz was not a close 2nd from what I saw, but he is deserving of the #2 spot. Barnett looked solid as a #3, but needs time to grow. Capello has potential as well, but also needs to grow.

Willie Scott looked great. Aaron Horne was a pleasant surprise.

Overall, looks like the D is potentially our strength. I'm going to call the D as better than last year and the Offense is going to continue with the same struggles putting TD's on the board IMO.

I hope everyone is prepared for 2-10. (at best)

I am sure a lot of this has been posted, but:

Overall, positive is depth. Still lack upper-echelon guys, but less holes. Negative- too many fumbles and drops.

-Zero separation at QB. All four could/should get a chance. Most comfortable with Barnett. Best combination of feel for the game and play making. I do not think his arm is as strong as JT and SJ, so I was impressed that he looked as good on such a windy day. Hopefully he can get better at the vertical passing.

-Willie Scott. I was surprised to hear Burnham mention his name a week ago, but I can see why. If he could just get his size up to where our small DE's have been, he may help us win some games in the future. Maybe he just knows the plays, but today he was the best DL at getting off-blocks. It was crazy. Not really a speed guy. Clearly not shoving guys around. Almost like he was a LB on a contain blitz, then when someone comes his way he squirts in there.

-OL could use Hughton and Tuftee's size. A lot of good young talent that needs more time in the weight room. Close to having a roster of winning Big 12 linemen.

-DL in general looked a lot more like a bunch of fighters than in the past. Probably no true playmakers, but definitely a "not get beat" group. We know about Rump, Jake, and Laing, but I thought Woods and Jensen look like they belong. For being only 18/19 freshman Jensen looked good. Has some natural ability. If Kron moves to the inside and Pompey can be the double-team type guy, I feel better about the future after the 3 upperclassmen leave

-With Horne the WR may be better. Seems like we have tons of "intriguing" guys, but not anyone that is a game changer when you remember what other teams in the Big 12 have. Money, Horne, Lenz are a good start. West and Jennert have some ability to be playmakers, but seem inconsistent. Gray, Young, and Blanton are decent athletes, but probably filler types.

-RB is like QB, but probably with relatively better players. Woody is becoming more of the fullback role. SJ, White, Hollis looked good. The backs spent more time in the slot than I recall from last year.

-A lot of young/new players on defense look like they have improved. George, Morgan, Bennett are good in space. If there were 4-levels to a defense Morgan and Bennett belong in the 3rd-level. Did not notice the safeties much, probably due to the wind. Washington, Broomfield, Jansen, Brooks, Givens all look the part.

I saw him sitting over there but didn't know anything was wrong. I know he was holding his arm after Dutch gave him a little pop after a pass, but he kept playing after that.

Did you specifically hear anything or was this just an observation?

I saw this happen as well. Jerome was sitting at the end of the bench opposite of the end of the field that the ball was on. Coaches yelled "Tiller!" a couple of times, then several players yelled "Jerome!" a few times. He finally heard them and started jogging toward the huddle, but by that time, Jantz was putting on his helmet and was at the huddle.

I noticed him grabbing at his right elbow several times throughout the game, usually after making a long throw.

I think this is fair based on what we saw today. I do, however, think that Jantz will improve more in the off-season than Tiller will. Whether it'll be enough to overtake the starting job is another question.

I agree that the D will be the strength, but I think once the offense is using the whole playbook, it will be hard to defend between all of the weapons we're starting to find.

Huh? This team is better than 2-10. They are going to be in that 4-8 win area. 50-50 chance at a Bowl game I say.

Unless Tiller has taken 30 steps forward no matter what ISU has anywhere else, the best ISU can do is 2-10 if he is the starter. Did you see how he folds under pressure with any sort of blitz? UNI made him look like a high school QB, many teams have.

Maybe we brought in Jantz to get a better chance with Aaron Horn. If he plays like that this fall he's going to be our go to go all season.

I'm not overly concerned about the snaps right now, but both the centers and QBs are going to have to work on that a lot this summer.
I am not surprised about Aaron. His film was impressive. He caught the ball with his hands and he could change in body around to make the hard catch. Thank god, we have at least one good receiver. He will be a threat on third down.

It's funny to read these not having seen or heard the scrimmage. It sounds like the QB situation is far from being over. All four quarterbacks have at least one poster here who thought they had the best day. I saw a couple posts that thought Tiller had the best day & a couple that thought he had a bad day and was pouting on the sidelines after being pulled.

Looks like it's going to be an interesting summer /fall.

Wasn't he injured for that game? I think he had surgery the following week.

Combine that with more practice, and it is possible he has taken "20" steps forward. 10 more to go.

Capello and Barnett just aren't in it. After they went up against the #1 defense, they had a much more difficult time. Based off of this thread and what pretty much everyone had to say at the game, Tiller had the better day overall, but Jantz had some bright spots, but a few more struggles.

Nobody is saying that the QB was won today, but at this point, Tiller is the #1 as of April 16th, which doesn't really mean much. You are correct though that it will be an interesting summer.

He was hurt I believe. I will also bet you $100 that we win more than 2 games. Put your money where your mouth is.

I think that we are a 5-6 win team right now where we sit

I think this is reasonable right now but we also have to realize that our D played without Knott which is big and we have the probability of starting one QB who is somewhat injured today or one that still isn't just reacting when he is in. Jantz still has to think about everything.

From what I saw Jantz looks like he is really prone to making a lot of mistakes and many of us were expecting too much from him. I really liked what I saw from Renyolds and I think that he is going to be a big time receiver for the team this year. As far as the rest of the receivers there is much improvent that is needed.

It was somewhat hard to tell but I thought that the devensive line looks like it has improved some from where it was last year. Also as expected the linebackers looked really good and so did LJ.

I think that we are in for another fun season this year and I think these guys can do some great things this fall.

True about Jantz. On a couple of snaps he looked like he was thinking too much or looking downfield and he mishandled a couple. I thought he still had a pretty good day and his throw to Horne for the long td showed what kind of arm he has as he was on the move and throwing into the wind on that perfectly thrown bomb. We haven't had many qb's that could make that throw.

He is small, so you may have missed him, but Horne looked like a great compliment to Money.

It's the spring game folks. Don't put too much stock into what you see. Remember last year? And the year before that?

To the guy who says 2-10 based on x,y,z... Really?! All that based on QBs in the spring game? You must have a crystal ball...

Oh definately I don't even know why I forgot to mention him. He really had a great day and we should have two really good receivers for next season. I just hope they can get a couple more to step up, which I think they will.

You are exactly right! We really dont know what is going to happen, but I just know that it is going to be a fun and successful year because we have a great coaching staff and players that work very hard as well!!
