Special teams! The BANE of Iowa State football.

Will us fans cringe when the special teams unit takes the field in 2021?

I really liked the kick offs in the Fiesta Bowl and hope that's in strong consideration.

Pooch it to the 20 and make it more of a punt coverage situation.

I saw ol Randy had a article about special teams today. Unfortunately its a pay to read article and I refuse to pay money to read anything by Randy Peterson lol.
FYI

Reading between the lines ...

Iowa State has found someone capable of at least somewhat consistently kicking footballs into the end zone and possibly beyond – or at least at a higher percentage than the Cyclones managed last season.

I say a prayer every night that the special teams unit takes a huge step forward this year.
I agree - but in big 12 play our special teams I would say was quite good. Rory Wahling saved us in the TX game (their fake pass on a punt formation), Kene had some monster returns, and special teams dominated in the bowl game against Oregon.

Now kicking through the endzone? Yes more of that please lol

OK, so Mavis had 59% of his kickoffs into or through the endzone. Doesn't sound that great, but better than we've done. My other concern is that the average field position of kickoffs fielded was at the 9-yard line. If that's the average he must have had some awfully short kickoffs as well.

Don't forget the walk on Bittman, who is supposed to have one of the strongest kickoff legs in this class. Seems like the staff really addressed one of the biggest weaknesses on last year's team. I do wonder what this means for the 2022 recruiting class, as we lose Assalley, Dunn and Mevis.
