Anyone watch the test flight/fall/attempted landing just now? I'm shocked they were that close to landing it on the first attempt. Actually made it to the landing pad, but didn't quite stick the landing. First step to Mars.

Everday Astronaut if you want a little commentary explaining what's going on.

Fast forward to near the end for the actual launch. The video is long because it was delayed an hour+.

I know a guy who is a skydiving instructor from a facility where he can see and hear the CA based launches. I would really like to go sometime, about a 2 hour drive for me. The sonic boom and the rings are crazy.

That would be awesome. I'd love to see a launch some day.

One day a few years ago you could see this over most of LA metro.

My friend was out on the streets and some lady said "Oh my god is this the end?".

One time my Dad was in an airplane over Florida when the Space Shuttle was launched. You looked out to the one side and could see the column of smoke rising in the distance.

Looks like it's happening to day finally, after weeks of waiting. I'm guessing the next one (SN10) isn't too far behind either since it's already set up on the launch stand. SpaceX will probably have their own youtube feed. Last time it didn't come online until right before the launch. These are all good options though, other than the NASA Spaceflight.com link already shared.:

(Everyday Astronaut lives in Waterloo BTW)

Sounds like they had to chase someone off the range (no one is allowed within 3-4 miles of the launch site), which caused a slight delay. During the SN8 launch, a boat came too close and delayed it by like 2 hours.

Everyday Astronaut keeps a fairly accurate estimate of the launch time just based on when he can tell they are beginning fuel up ect... SpaceX doesn't really make the time public. Pretty much all the tests become known just with fans keeping track of road closures, FAA flight restrictions and evacuations of Boca Chica (the nearby town). They put Iowa State fans tracking the university plane during coaching searches to shame.

As a side note, how crazy would it be to live in Boca Chica? A small little podunk town with nothing in it that suddenly ended up at ground zero for the development of the largest most powerful rocket ever built. And you have to evacuate every time they have a major test/launch. Would be incredible to have a front row seat for this stuff.

Wild to watch something so expensive crash land and blow up like that. Have to give it to the live announcer guy for not even reacting for about ten seconds afterward, and then calmly announce that it was so close but they'll get good data out of this.

Looks like only one engine restarted. So still a few issues to work out.
Yep. It's nice they've got another one that'll probably be ready to test in a couple weeks. That's the key with Spacex's advancement. They aren't afraid of failures. If it doesn't work, they find out what went wrong, fix it, then try again. Rinse and repeat until they get it right.
